Well it was too cloudy for northern lights viewing, but we sure did get our fill of nature and wildlife! We spent an amazing Labor Day with friends at a remote cabin in Maine. The weekend was filled with waterfall hikes, apple picking, moose spotting, and lots of delicious food and good times. 10/10 would recommend a relaxing outdoor getaway to recharge the soul 🍂🌲⛰️🐸🥾

Cruise day 3 began with breakfast on the balcony overlooking MSC’s private island Ocean Cay! After breakfast, we got off the ship and spent the entire day on the island paddling in a crystal kayak, swimming in the lagoon, and relaxing on the beach. The weather was PERFECT and I only got a little crispy. 😅

We returned to the ship in the afternoon for some drinks and live music in the Brooklyn Cafe and our final dinner in the main dining room. What a great getaway!

On day 2 we woke up in Nassau making the Bahamas my 18th country! We spent nearly the whole day in port exploring the main shopping streets, haggling at the famous Straw Market, and visiting the beautiful 300 year old Graycliff Hotel and Restaurant. The building was first constructed as a home and cigar factory by the pirate Captain John Howard Graysmith. It has changed ownership many times but still functions as an upscale hotel, restaurant, and cigar factory! It has hosted many celebrities and royals over the years.

After exploring the port where locals were setting up for a 51st Independence Day celebration, we got back on the ship to enjoy the pools, water slides, and entertainment activities. The evening concluded with an excellent 3 course dinner in the main dining room, and dancing all night at the White Party on the upper deck! So fun!

We celebrated National Lighthouse Day at the Relighting of Scituate Light this evening. Scituate light holds a special place in our hearts as my husband and I both have a strong family connection to this town. However, over the years we have been lucky to visit so many lighthouses near and far in our travels including Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and most recently Hawaii! Where’s your favorite lighthouse? What lighthouse would you like to visit on your next trip? ⚓️

Our last full day in Hawaii was filled with water adventures! We began the day with a relaxing morning on the beach and in the afternoon we did an Xtreme Parasailing excursion! It was really fun and so beautiful to see Waikiki Beach from high up in the air. 🪂🏝️🩱

After parasailing, we grabbed a quick dinner nearby the harbor before catching our Moana Sunset Cocktail Cruise where we got to relax on a giant catamaran and watch the sun set over the ocean. (Obviously we had more Mai Tais.) It was such a beautiful way to end our dream vacation. 🌅⛵️🍹

Day 7 in Hawaii brought us to the Polynesian Cultural Center where we spent the ENTIRE day and still didn’t get to see and do everything they have to offer! This center is essentially an interactive museum representing the islands of Tonga, Tahiti, Hawaii, Fiji, Aotearoa (aka New Zealand), and Samoa. Each “island” has its own cultural demonstrations and activities that guests young and old can take part in. Personally, we most enjoyed the stick games of Aotearoa, the ukulele lesson in Hawaii, and the drum show in Tonga.

The day also included a narrated canoe tour through the islands where we got to see the type of Fijian boat that Moana would have sailed. Finally, after a relaxing stroll through the Hukilau Marketplace for snacks and souvenirs, we enjoyed a delicious all-you-can-eat dinner at the Gateway Buffet. The evening concluded with an INCREDIBLE (I’m talking Broadway-quality) show in the Pacific Theater. The show, Hā: Breath of Life, follows the story of a young boy as he experiences each stage of life in a different Polynesian culture. The music, costumes, choreography, animations, and pyrotechnics were unbelievable and we somehow ended up with front row seats!!!! I could not get over the quality of the entire day’s experience and for an unreal value! The PCC is a must visit for any family traveling to Oahu.

We couldn’t visit Oahu without making an important stop at the Pearl Harbor National Museum and USS Arizona Memorial. It was surreal to be surrounded by so much history and fascinating to learn about the events that led to that “day that will live in infamy” over 80 years ago. ⚓️🚢🇺🇸

Later that afternoon we made the (questionable?) decision to hike Diamond Head in the blaring sun - but I’d say the views were worth it!!! Finally, we ended the day with another incredible dinner and watching fireworks on the beach. ☀️🍽️🎇

Hawaii day 5 was spent exploring the Waimea Canyon of Kauai (aka “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific”). After our trip to the Grand Canyon last summer, I can confirm the similarity is striking! In addition to the incredible views of the canyons, waterfalls, and Napali coast, there was also a native Hawaiian man dressed in traditional clothing explaining the history and geography of the region. This man is named Punohu and he does not work for the state park or any tourist group. He is simply an indigenous person who feels that Hawaii does not offer enough authentic cultural experiences for its booming tourist industry. His goal is to make sure that visitors to his island are knowledgable and informed about how precious their land, history, and culture are to his people and to spread awareness for its protection. We were absolutely fascinated by his stories and could have listened to him all day if it weren’t for the plane we had to catch… 🌺⛰️✈️

In the afternoon, we boarded our very quick flight to Oahu and eventually arrived at our Waikiki Beach waterfront hotel. The location was perfect right next to the Honolulu zoo, Diamond Head mountain, and the beach was literally just outside the lobby door. We got settled, checked out the rooftop pool, and ended the evening with another stunning beach sunset. 🌅🏝️🌊

Our last full day in Kauai began with a sunrise beach walk, along with a relaxing morning at our resort. In the afternoon, we explored the private resort neighborhood of Princeville and spent a few hours at one of the beautiful beaches on the east coast. Finally, we ended the day at the Smith Family Luau, which was nothing short of a well-oiled-machine! Seriously this was one of the most high quality and well organized experiences on the island. Over a hundred guests were greeted with shell necklaces, and a narrated tram tour of the lush tropical gardens, and then a demonstration of the traditional Imu oven ceremony that kicks off the luau. ☀️🌊🏖️

We were treated to a feast of Hawaiian classics such as poi, coconut jello, and of course the kalua pork that was cooked in the underground imu. After dinner, drinks, and some hula music and dancing, we all moved over to the Lagoon Theater for the show. It was an hour of traditional dances from six of the Polynesian islands that have their cultures represented in Hawaii (Tahiti, Samoa, Philippines, and more!). Of course, the show ended with spectacular fire dancing - and we were lucky to get great seats in the second row! 🐖💃🔥

I can say pretty confidently that our third day in Hawaii was easily one of the top ten best days of my life. 😍

We started off the day with a visit to the Wailua Falls where ancient Hawaiians would courageously (and stupidly) prove themselves by trying to survive the 80 foot jump to the pools below. Let’s just say we didn’t wanna chance it… Next we explored a few beaches on the south shore of the island before grabbing a quick snack of malasadas, famous Portuguese doughnuts, from the Kauai Bakery. ⛰️🍩

After our snack, we did a 7 mile kayak/hike to the Secret Falls where we got to swim at the base of the waterfall! Amazing! Finally, we ended the day with THE most incredible meal we have ever had. At the Beach House restaurant, our table was right on the outside patio overlooking the water and we enjoyed our Mai Tais and delicious food as we watched the setting sun. ☀️🍹

Day 2 in Kauai began with an early morning adventure to watch the sunrise which also led us to a beach where sea turtles and even the endangered monk seals like to rest in the morning. We were so lucky to see a family of each just basking in the sun and playing in the water! Next we took our rental Jeep down some rocky backroads by a horse farm to walk to Makauwahi Cave trail which was an absolutely gorgeous cliff side trail which leads into a giant prehistoric cave. 🐴🐢🦭

Later in the afternoon we made our way to the north shore in Hanalei to enjoy a traditional shave ice (with macadamia nut ice cream!) before our surfing lesson! Andrew and I both agree that this was our favorite activity overall - the beach and waves were perfect and we were both able to successfully stand and surf all the way to shore multiple times without falling. It was so fun to experience that authentic “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride”. 🏄‍♀️🌊🍧

My husband and I just got back from a bucket-list trip to Hawaii and we wanted to stay as disconnected from our phones as possible to make the most of the amazing vacation. Now that we’re back and feeling refreshed, I’m excited to share some of our adventures!
🌺
On our first day, we arrived to the beautiful island of Kauai, aka the Garden Island. In all honesty, it could also be called the chicken island since wild chickens outnumber local residents by 6 to 1! They were everywhere - it was awesome! We got checked in to our beautiful beachfront resort and spent the evening enjoying some Hawaiian barbecue, POG juice (iykyk), and taking in our first Hawaiian sunset on the beach.

I’ve officially made it home safely from my 10 day trip through Prague, Salzburg, Vienna, and Budapest. I had a nice long flight to think about all of the new experiences I was able to have this week and here are a few I’d like to share:

🌆 Favorite city: Vienna
👐🏻 Favorite experience: Thermal baths in Budapest
😱 Most pleasant surprise: Cesky Krumlov
🍽️ Best meal: Every single soup I had this week.

No, but I’m so serious about that last one - Eastern Europe KNOWS what they’re doing and that’s coming from a proud soup girly. I had Italian veggie, creamy garlic, potato chowder, Hungarian bean soup, creamy turkey & veggie, and all were amazing. 😋 Anyway, I’ve also realized that the only things I photograph while traveling are food and architecture. I just can’t get enough! Good thing my next trip is less than a week away 🤣✈️🌎

Our last day in Budapest! This morning we headed straight for the Széchenyi Baths for some much needed relaxation after 10 days of walking 6 miles each 😅. This is one of the biggest and most well-known natural thermal bath houses in Budapest, but there are so many more throughout the city. It has multiple indoor and outdoor pools of varying temperatures, as well as saunas, steam rooms, salt chambers, and a private spa area. Amazing!!! After enjoying our morning there, we took an afternoon stroll through the city including the Vajdahunyad Castle gate, Fisherman’s Bastion, and of course, the Parliament building. We were also able to ride on the metro line 1 which is the second oldest metro system in Europe (after London) and another UNESCO landmark. Finally, we finished the evening with a light dinner in the hotel restaurant while watching some of the Netherlands/Turkey Euro Cup match. Now it’s time to head home! ✈️⚽️🇭🇺

Hungary is my 17th country!!!! We began the day with a stop in Györ where they were gearing up for a big fair. Europe is a great place to visit in the summertime for all sorts of community events and festivals. After our brief lunch stop we continued on to Budapest. This city is comprised of the two sides of the river, Buda and Pest, and both are equally amazing. We took a quick stroll through Elizabeth Square to see the massive Ferris wheel. Finally we ended the night with a traditional Hungarian folklore dinner. Each course was delicious and the entertainment included music, dancing, and a lot of antics involving wine. 😂🍷💃🇭🇺

Wien ist zauberhaft! 🎼♥️ We spent the day exploring the BEAUTIFUL city of Vienna. We began at St. Stephen’s Cathedral and then partook in the UNESCO cultural heritage of coffee and cake (for me a hot chocolate and the original Sachertorte sour cherry chocolate cake of Vienna). We continued to the Naschmarkt to sample fresh cheeses and produce before taking a stroll through the volksgarten. The ring road surrounding the old town takes the place of the original city walls and is now known for being home to some of the most beautiful architecture in Vienna. And speaking of beautiful architecture, we ended our day with a guided tour of the enormous Schönbrunn Palace and gardens which was the summer palace of the Hapsburg family and the childhood home of Marie Antoinette. It’s design was based on the palace of Versailles and in my opinion is just as gorgeous!

Shining as bright as Austria ✨ On our travel day from Salzburg to Vienna, we made an important stop at the Mauthausen concentration camp that opened in 1938. We visited the somber memorial and paid our respects to the thousands of victims whose lives were senselessly taken during World War 2. Next, we continued on to the City of Music for a beautiful dinner in the Viener Rathauskeller (City Hall) and a live concert of Mozart’s greatest works at the Musikverein. Overall it was another lovely day full of culture, history, and music. 🎶🇦🇹

I was so happy to return to the beautiful city of Salzburg yesterday - home of The Sound of Music (one of my top favorite movies of all time) and also the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (you may have heard of him before 😉🎶). We toured the elegant Mirabell Gardens and the old town, including riding the funicular up to Fortress Hohensalzburg and exploring the residence apartments where Mozart and his family once lived. In the afternoon, we headed to the lakeside town of St. Gilgen and I’ll tell you photos cannot do this place justice. The town is surrounded by gorgeous mountains and sits at the edge of Lake Wolfgang. The setting is absolutely idyllic and I definitely want to come back and stay for at least a few days! ⛰️⛵️🇦🇹

WOW! Today I was fortunate enough to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site, Česky Krumlav. This is a a little town in the southern Czech Republic that I had never even heard of before, but it is nothing short of a fairytale. The 13th century palace and surrounding town are perfectly preserved and escaped damage during the wars, which lets visitors get a true feel for 1200s village life. As featured on the Rožmberks family coat of arms, there are even European brown bears guarding the castle gates!

I enjoyed some sightseeing of the castle, gardens, and shops. Then of course I had to sample traditional Czech cuisine and had a lunch of pork, cabbage, and bread dumplings at a spot along the river. Safe to say this is definitely a place I’d like to come back to some day.

Our last day in Prague would not be complete without a visit to the top of the city - Prague Castle! We climbed the steps to the beautiful fortress and cathedral where there was an ongoing ceremony for the Order of the Falcon. We learned that this group comes together in Prague every six years to celebrate the Czech immigrants who had to leave their home country due to war and political conflict. It was so cool to see such an important cultural event.
