The murals were created by the late Bill Mitchell - a muralist, cartoonist, artist, and local historian – who was born on April 14, 1949 and lived most of his years in Anacortes. 🎨🖌

The Anacortes Museum recently announced a new self-guided, smartphone tour of the Bill Mitchell Mural Project. Get to know the history of downtown Anacortes

First HIKE Day returns January 1, 2025! 🥾

First HIKE events range in difficulty from paved, flat ADA-accessible trails to moderate hill climbs. A few parks will host more than one hike with options tailored to different interests and abilities. Additionally, some hikes will include fun and educational talks with rangers where you can learn about the history and natural features of the parks.

First Day Hikes is a national initiative led by America’s State Parks, encouraging people to start the new year outside. Last year, more than 1,700 participants hiked, biked and snowshoed 2,907.2 trails miles in Washington’s state parks. When participants are done, they’ll receive a free, collectable Washington State Parks 2025 First Day Hikes pin.

Visitors won’t need a Discover Pass to park on state-managed lands since Jan. 1 is our first Discover Pass free day of 2025. However, they may need to register for events with participation limits and/or purchase the appropriate Sno-Park permit. And thanks to the Washington State Parks Foundation, each park will have drinks and snacks available for First Day Hikes participants to enjoy.

The is the perfect hub to start your adventures in our state parks, including Bay View State Park, Deception Pass State Park, Hope Island Marine State Park, Larrabee State Park, Rasar State Park, Rockport State Park, and Saddlebag Island Marine State Park.
