Campanario Biological Station, down on the Osa Peninsula.

Where the jungle meets the sea, where macaws and monkeys eat fruit right outside the window, and civilization is a boat ride away.

And base of operations starting August 2023.

When wildlife watches back.

Forced to seek out smaller and scarcer bodies of water due to the prolonged Dry Season, these two caimans let me get pretty close. Didn't mean they weren't aware of my presence--one kept an open eye on me the whole time.

Luckily for them, the rains began again in earnest soon after this photo was taken.

So close!

These fresh footprints were as close as we got to seeing tapirs this last trip. The resident female walked along the beach just before dawn, right outside the station.

Since is so effectively protected, tapirs here are much less shy than in other parts of the country. This truly is the best place to see this rare animal.

You know the dry season is over when the frogs come out.

These were all taken on a single night at a single small pond. Over six different species! All it took was a little rain to wake them up.

Stopped by Dominicalito for surfing. Weather was perfect--no rain, and just enough clouds that it wasn't too hot. Plus, the beach wasn't crowded at all.

Birding over breakfast!

Had such a great time in Birding is easy when the birds come right to you. Didn't even have to leave the cabin.

On this date years ago:
Flashback to one of our first trips in Costa Rica. We spent Christmas at Campanario Station down in the Osa Peninsula. The trip was phenomenal, with dolphins swimming alongside the boat on the ride there. The highlight, though? A tapir that we found sleeping in the middle of the path and refused to move.

What they call "Winter" in the northern hemisphere is called "Dry Season" in Costa Rica. It begins in December and goes until roughly late April.

Look for clear skies, lots of blooming flowers, and plenty of wildlife activity. It's. A great time to visit.

Best Christmas of all time was spent right here. Didn't get any snow, though.

A year ago today...

On a hike with a friend through , we found a blue morpho butterfly on the ground. It was dying, weak and tattered, clearly at the end of its short life. I don't usually handle wildlife in reserves, but I let this one crawl into my hand where it feebly beat its wings, still iridescent in the sun. It was a somber moment, one that had us reflecting on the beauty of nature and circle of life.

Costa Rica's rainy season may not be the most popular time to visit, but it has its perks: wildlife is abundant, the land is lush, and you get some of the most stunning scenery.

Volcanos peeking out of clouds, forests shrouded in mist, gorgeous sunsets--this is the Tropics at their most majestic.

It's been quite a dry spell, but our social media intern/owner/guide/coordinator/driver/photographer McKenzie has just discovered iNaturalist. If you don't know the app, it's like Instagram but for nature nerds. He's been busy IDing people's photos and posting some of his own. You may see some of photos there. Check it out to see where they were taken! Look for mckenzie73

The many trails of Costa Rica.

I thought about using some inspirational quote with the words "path" or "destination" or something, but I think I'll just let the photos speak for themselves.

Liana Travels will be running trips again soon. For now, we're happy to consult on any tropical adventures you might be planning.
