Just started to settle in for the season

Northern Maine will be the place to be on Monday, April 8, 2024, as visitors from across the country and the world travel to the region to view a total eclipse of the sun. While such occurrences happen around the world about every 18 months, they occur at any given place only every 360 to 410 years

Hello mud season...

You may be ready, but the ATV trails are not. Riding on trails before they are open for the season can cause significant damage and can result in landowners permanently closing trails to all users. Do your part to respect private landowners and maintain Maine's trails by waiting until they are open.

Most trails won't be open until late April or early May. Dates are determined by the property owner and/or the club or organization maintaining the trail. Learn more at mefishwildlife.com/atv

We are pleased to share that the National Park Foundation will make a $1 million contribution to support the completion of Tekαkαpimək Contact Station at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument as part of the Monumental Welcome Campaign. Tekαkαpimək translates from the Penobscot language to “as far as one can see” and is pronounced de gah-gah bee mook.

We are grateful for our longstanding partnership with the National Park Foundation and this investment in the future of the monument!

Our campaign total is now approaching $30 million towards a $35 million goal, thanks to the generosity of all of our donors. Read the full press release here: https://www.friendsofkww.org/npf-1-million-gift/

Please note: The Tekαkαpimək Contact Station site is an active construction zone and is closed to visitors at this time. A grand opening is planned for August 17, 2024. All Wabanaki cultural knowledge and intellectual property shared within the project is owned by the Wabanaki Nations.

Today marks two weeks since my awesome friend passed away. He was a father of two great boy, a Maine Guide where I first met him, on the Penobscot River, 35 plus years ago, we had so much fun. A resident of Chusuncook village from the time he was a young man and the keeper of history of the village. He loved walking the shore looking for native and logging artifacts and he found many of both. I always enjoyed bringing my son up to the village to visit him and listen to his stories. When my son and I would camp out at Longly campsite he and his dog Fig would motor over in the morning for coffee, miles away.
I always enjoyed walking below the high water line looking for artifacts, very few would escape his eye.
I’m here in the Mountains of North Carolina keeping the fire burning and closing up his house where he resided for the past three years, he couldn’t take the northern snow anymore. I’m taking care of his place and packing up the stuff so the boys can put it on the market soon. It’s a sad state of affairs.
I found this little poem on his refrigerator the other day, I think he knew time was short.
Enjoy life my friends because, you never know when it will come to an end. He had a list of projects for me to do this visit and lots of plans for the summer.

Our craftsmen have been making our handcrafted canoe paddles the same way for over 150 years. Today we still use much of the same equipment that we did when water-powered in 1858. Our paddles are considered by many to be the finest traditional wooden paddles in the World. Here is a glimpse into how....
