This summer, James and I took a drive down the road from our house to film this beautiful corn field at sunset just for fun. I forgot about it and never transferred it to a hard drive until that corn song went viral a few months ago. 😂 Today I found it on one of the SD cards I used to film a different project yesterday.
That cute little boy who loves corn, he was eating a different variety of corn than what’s in this video. He was munching on sweet corn. This is called field corn. In fact, 99% of corn grown in the U.S. is actually field corn. The way I remember it is when sweet corn is ready for harvest, the kernels are soft. When field corn is ready for harvest, the kernels are hard! Field corn is used to feed livestock and poultry but it’s also used in a variety of products that might surprise you. Corn is also used to make glue, fireworks, crayons, chalk, cosmetics, and ink!
This corn was planted in the springtime (March / April) and was harvested in late September. At this stage it was around a month or a month and a half after planting. This field in particular was harvested in late September, much later than the farmer wanted to because it rained for weeks on end after it was ready to harvest. The drawn-out rain damaged many Louisiana soybean and corn crops this year resulting in a huge finical loss for farmers.
While eating sweet corn never gets old, the history of corn goes way back! Corn was a staple in the diet of many Native American groups. They used corn’s sugary leaves for chewing gum, immature corn was their vegetable, and dry, mature kernels were ground into flour.
What’s your favorite way to eat corn?? Mine is sweet corn with butter! Yum. Or in a crawfish boil - if it’s not too spicy and burns your lips off. 🌶
