Did you know: A Greek chef living in Buffalo, NY decided to bring his 150-year old turtle with him when he went over Niagara Falls in a barrel!

George Stathakis was looking to raise money to publish his philosophy books...so naturally he decided to hurl himself over the thunder waters of Niagara for publicity!
-
To add even more excitement to the stunt, Stathakis brough his pet turtle, which was estimated to be a century-and-a-half old, along for the ride.

Unfortunately, the barrel became trapped behind the Horseshoe Falls, and Stathakis did not survive the stunt. The tortoise, however, made it out alive, and continued to live for several years.

Did you know: the elevator shaft down to the Cave of the Winds in Niagara Falls had to be dug by hand!
-
In the 1920s, the people behind the Cave of the Winds attraction decided to replace the original stairs with an efficient elevator. However, due to the nature of the Niagara Gorge, it would be too dangerous to use dynamite or heavy equipment. As a result, the 175-foot shaft was dug out by hand with pickaxes and shovels. The workers then had to tunnel out to the edge of the gorge.

Today, workers still disassemble the Cave of the Winds wood decks every fall, and reassemble them every spring!

Did you know: Niagara Falls was the testing ground for the artificial seawater used in aquariums all over the world!

In the 1960s, scientists were working to create an artificial saltwater for aquarium use. Prior to this, all large aquariums had to be built along the coastlines, or spend large amounts of money to transport seawater from the ocean. These scientists settled in Niagara Falls (where 1/5th of the world's liquid freshwater travels), and set to work creating the perfect recipe.

The research facility eventually became the Aquarium of Niagara, and the artificial seawater that was designed there is still used in aquariums all over the world!

Did you know: the captain of the world-famous Maid of the Mist took the boat through the Class-6 rapids of the lower Niagara River in 1861!

Captain Joel Robinson already had a wild streak. In 1860, he successfully walked across the American Falls with a 10-foot iron staff (he was inspired to do the stunt after watching Bossy the cow's antics a few months earlier).

By 1861, the owner of the Maid of the Mist was forced to sell the boat to a buyer in Queenston, Ontario in order to cover his mounting debts during the American Civil War. unfortunately, Queenston sits on the other side of the Lower Niagara Rapids and whirlpool: some of the strongest waters in the world!

Captain Robinson drove the paddle-wheel steamship through 30-foot high waves, reaching speeds of 30 miles-per-hour. During the wild ride, the smokestack clipped a wire on the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge and was knocked clean off.

Luckily, Captain Robinson managed to deliver the boat, and received a bonus payout of $500.

Did you know: on June 5, 1990, whitewater daredevil Jesse Sharp attempted to kayak over Niagara Falls!
-
The 28-year-old kayaker planned to go over Niagara Falls, continue through the lower river's Class 5 Terminal rapids, and end in Lewiston, NY. Sharp was so certain that he would accomplish this feat, he made dinner reservations along the shore of Water Street in Lewiston.
-
In addition, Sharp refused to wear a helmet so that his face would be visible to the cameras. He also avoided wearing a life jacket so that he wouldn't become trapped in the kayak.
-
Unfortunately for Jesse, the Canadian power companies immediately noticed him in the river, and aggressively diverted as much of Niagara's flow as possible to attempt to ground him. Ignoring the rapidly-lowering water level, Jesse paddled around the rocks and thrust himself over the edge of the Horseshoe Falls. He was never seen again.

Demolishing a building is hard enough, but taking down a building sitting next to a new $7.8 million greenhouse is terrifying!
-
After the Niagara Falls Wintergarden was completed in 1978, it was decided that the Hancock Building (which can be seen to the left in the photo below) had to go.
-
Unfortunately, this meant that crews had to figure out how to take down a brick and stone building as meticulously as possible.
-
Thankfully, the demolition crew managed to take down the entire building without cracking a single pane of glass on the 107 foot tall Cesar Pelli designed public greenhouse.
