A Day Away in Birmingham Tour Coordinator and Tour Guide Service in Birmingham, Alabama It is so discouraging when we can't possibly share it all! And Jim says, "Thank you, Mother!" P.S.

As Birmingham, Alabama Tour Guides and Coordinators, Jim and I don't just sit on your motorcoach enjoying the ride as we go from Point A to Points around....we are sharing narrative about The Magic City as we ride. And between the two of us, after almost 30 years of sharing historical information, our heads are about to explode with information we want to share! A side note, your group may learn

a few new words from us....one of them Y'ALL! Yes, a Southern word which is essential in the South. And that is how we end our tour....Y'ALL COME BACK TO SEE US REAL-L-L SOON, YA HEAH! He's older than me!!! But he pretends otherwise! That rascal!

Fall is in the air…and there will be scarecrows lining the Civic Center! We invite all people, businesses, clubs and organizations to be a part of The Arts in Gardendale’s annual Scarecrow Decorating Contest this year!!

Posts will be provided and decorating will begin on October 13th. Participants will have October 13th-15th to decorate their scarecrows.

Voting will take place October 23rd-26th. This year, we will take pictures of each scarecrow and post them to Facebook on our page. The scarecrow that receives the most ‘likes’ on their picture is the winner! We encourage all participants to share the post in order to promote your work of art🤩

There is a $20 entrance fee that can be paid at the Gardendale Public Library. Check out some of the scarecrows from last years competition in the comments for inspiration.

Happy Decorating!

Oh, Yes!

Good morning, Birmingham! ☀️ Rise and shine, it's a brand new day. Did you know that Birmingham's Vulcan statue, the world's largest cast iron statue, was built in 1904 for the St. Louis World's Fair? Talk about flexing those iron muscles! Let's tackle this day with the same strength and determination.

Today I am having a "trip back in time". This day was a good one. My sweet neighbor, Faye Fulmer and her friend Darlene Gray presented an excellent presentation on Arlington House, more than likely the only remaining antebellum home left standing in Birmingham. Remember Birmingham came into existence after the NOT SO CIVIL WAR! Arlington is such a lovely site with a pristine lawn and gardens, antiques throughout the two floors. Jim Kelley and I love to include a lunch or dinner at Arlington. The food prepared by Chef Matt is excellent and the atmosphere is also. Plus, a guided tour of the house is included in the cost of the meal! Groups love Arlington and so do we!

Okayyyyy! Since some of my friends always ask how our most recent tour went....here goes! Jim Kelley and I welcomed a group from Canada yesterday. Of course, they speak French as well as English. The Tour Operator, Mario would speak to them in French while Jim and I were silently praying he was not saying anything uncomplimentary about us! Trust me, it was like herding cats at the beginning of the tour because they all desperately needed a restroom break. And such facilities at the HAMPTON INN TUTWILER HOTEL are limited for a group of 33! Less facilities are available at the LINN HENLEY RESEARCH LIBRARY, our first stop. We had carefully planned the itinerary. You have no idea how much work goes into planning....even going so far as to asking my brother, Larry H. Rogers who was visiting from Florida to take me on the route one evening after the traffic had decreased. His reward for being so kind, a stop at ROJO ON HIGHLAND! Love the outdoor dining with the colored lights and the congenial atmosphere! I regress so back to the tour info. After the personal needs of the travelers were "relieved", we walked over to the LINN HENLEY RESEARCH LIBRARY, the first free-standing library in Birmingham. The group received a warm welcome from Mary Ann as she met us at the entrance. She described the beautiful Ezra Winter murals which adorn the walls of the library. Then we were introduced to the art of restoring and preserving old maps. The gentleman (I am so ashamed but his name has totally dissolved from my brain!) truly loves his work. And our guests loved both hostess and host. The group would have stayed around much longer but we had other sites to see so off we went! Side note: Birmingham is credited for maintaining this beautiful building. Historic Preservation at its finest.
Then, to my favorite...ALABAMA PEANUT COMPANY. My buddy, Chase did a terrific talk about the history of peanut roasting and provided the group with free samples....the typical roasted peanuts, salt & vinegar boiled peanuts and cajun boiled peanuts. What a treat for our visitors from way up north! Jim and I loved every minute acting as servers to this enthusiastic group of "peanut diners"! Oh, sooo much fun!!! Leaving Alabama Peanut Company, the ride down bumpy Morris Avenue with cars parked on each side of this rather narrow street, the driver of the motorcoach handled the motorcoach expertly! Next stop, VULCAN PARK. Remember Jim and I don't just sit there enjoying the ride as we go from Point A to Points around....we are sharing narrative about The Magic City as we ride. And between the two of us, after almost 30 years of sharing historical information, our heads are about to explode with information we want to share! It is so discouraging when we can't possibly share it all! At Vulcan Park, they enjoyed the view of the city from the Overlook Point and were not in the least bit unsettled by Vulcan's buttocks being exposed to the world! They reminded us that they are French so such things don't shock them!! We laughed out loud!!! Next, the BIRMINGHAM BOTANICAL GARDENS to walk through the Dunn Formal Rose Garden and the Hill Garden. Mario, the Tour Operator and the owner of the company had never been to the Gardens and seemed to be impressed. Perhaps he will request this on his next visit. Back on the motorcoach and heading toward the hotel....oh, but I arranged the itinerary to go down historic SECOND AVENUE NORTH. Why? I absolutely love, love, love this street. Many historic buildings which have been lovingly "restored & repurposed", that's why! At the day's end, both Jim and I knew we gave it our best effort. With the limited time we were allowed., we missed some sites which are important to Birmingham's history. These people truly rank as one, if not the most loving, warm,-hearted group. We could see they were really interested in seeing Birmingham in all its glory. Every tour group is different. Every tour is different. It takes much time to cover the parts of the city we THINK might be most interesting to a group. On this tour, we focused on The Five Basic Senses.
The eyes give us the sense of sight.
The ears give us the sense of hearing.
The nose gives us the sense of smell.
The tongue gives us the sense of taste.
The skin gives us the sense of touch.
On a side note, they tried with all their hearts to teach me to speak French ....to no avail. I learned a few words from them and they learned a few from me....one of them Y'ALL! Yes, a Southern word which is essential in the South. And that is how we ended our tour....Y'ALL COME BACK TO SEE US REAL-L-L SOON, YA HEAH! And Jim says, "Thank you, Mother!" P.S. Winter in The Magic City can be bright and sunny one day and gray and gloomy the next. Yep, up and down. For us, the perfect solution to the Wintertime Blues is to enjoy some of the wonderful restaurants during Birmingham Restaurant Week. It's like a Wintertime Food Vacation!

Jim and I spent a chilly day in The Magic City with AFC Vacations. We met them at the hotel and began narration from the hotel to the downtown area. The "windshield" tour consisted of information about the Civil Rights District/Monument, the Entertainment District, the Historical District where we visited Alabama Peanut Company and a visit to the museum and a ride up the Observation Tower at Vulcan Park and Museum. One of the highlights for us was to see Chase at Alabama Peanut Company, and Casey Gamble Frank Tyson and Jan Massie at Vulcan Park. Quite a wonderful reunion we had and hope we see them again real soon!

My brother and I visited our cousin, Jackie in Huntsville yesterday. After a delicious lunch, Jackie took us to The Burritt Mansion. Worth a visit! Lovely home and interesting man, this Dr. Burritt was. His car is one-of-a-kind!

The Burritt Mansion in Huntsville, Alabama....yes, a drive from Birmingham, but I highly recommend it as a "must-see" sight in Alabama.

Jim and I are looking forward to meeting a group flying into Birmingham from California, Texas and Who Knows Where! We are excited about showing off beautiful Birmingham, The Magic City! Of couse, we KNOW the true magic in Birmingham is THE PEOPLE! So if you see a Cline Tours motorcoach lumbering through the city at a snail's pace....how about showing us some Southern Hospitality and give a "wave" or a "HEY Y'ALL", GLAD TO HAVE YOU IN TOWN"? We will be stopping at one of my favorite stops because of the hospitality they show our groups, especially my sweet friend, Chase does...ALABAMA PEANUT COMPANY on historic Morris Avenue!!!

Jim and I welcomed Jacobsen Tours Travelers to Birmingham yesterday. The group of lovely people came to The Magic City, not knowing where they were going! A Mystery Tour! I am thinking the highlight of their tour was the lunch at the Arlington House. Oh, my....was it ever delicious. The chef, Matt and the director, Toby welcomes the group with such enthusiasm and love, each surely felt Southern Hospitality at its finest!

Jim will do anything to get a group to book a tour in Birmingham, Alabama. Here he is trying to act like Tarzan.....unfortunately, he sounds more like Jane!
