We are on high alert for ! Normally at this point in the season, wildflowers would be blooming, but we haven't seen a great deal so far -- a few prickly phlox, currants, Indian paintbrush and bush lupine. The less than average rainfall this year and late in the season rainstorms may mean this season’s wildflowers will be ‘late bloomers.’ This small cluster of California brittlebush (Encelia californica) was seen a few days ago on Inspiration Point Loop Trail in Will Rogers State Historic Park. Sometimes our tour guests catch a glimpse of one of these creatures on our Wine Tours, while dining at Duke's Malibu for lunch!

Every year, thousands of gray whales make a 10,000 mile round-trip migration from Alaska to the Baja peninsula and back. Right now, many of those whales are cruising past our shores as they head north to Alaska. We can witness this great migration from the bluffs and vista points along the Santa Monica Mountains coast by simply finding a nice vantage point, waiting for clear weather, and grabbing a pair of binoculars.

If you're lucky you will see a spout, or a whale breach as they take in this part of the Pacific Ocean. For hundreds of years, humans hunted these whales here in California and other places, and the whales almost went extinct. Today, after decades of protection, the whales have reclaimed their place in our wild ocean and they now number in the tens of thousands.

Join a ranger along the bluffs of Leo Carrillo State Beach on Saturday, March 17th at 10am. Meet at visitor center. Bring a hat, water, sunscreen, and binoculars. -Ranger Kate
