☀️ While many of us warm weather-loving souls are excited when May rolls around, May 1st in Germany is a much bigger deal than it is in the United States.
May Day is actually a government holiday in Germany, and all businesses (minus some restaurants) are closed. The origins of this holiday date way back to an ancient festival which welcomes the spring weather and drives away evil spirits.
On May Day, the German Maibaum (Maypole) is erected in the center of the town, and is kept up throughout the summer season.
