Expert advice on when and how to add a retriever to your team

03/02/2024

Lingering mild conditions, fueled largely by an "El Niño" weather system, caused the migration to stall, leaving many hunters in all four U.S. flyways wondering, "Where are the ducks?"

The latest Dabbler Tracking Update tells the same story, with birds finally migrating to the southern states where they would typically have arrived weeks ago in previous years.

Risky Retrieves Think before you “send,” especially in any of these scenarios By Bill Miller There’s a gut punch of regret that’s more nauseating than spoiled pork sausages and more painful than a DIY appendectomy. And if you put your dog in danger by sending him or her on an ill-advised ret...

This drake mallard has it all figured out! We captured this bird in west Tennessee on December 12th 2021. He has made two successful migrations north to the breeding grounds and is currently spending his third winter with a GPS transmitter in western Mississippi. He has traveled over 9,600 miles since we put a transmitter on him. With just a couple more weeks of hunting season remaining, he is close to surviving another hunting season. It is rare to get three years of data from our transmitters because the batteries usually die but we are keeping our fingers crossed!

MDWFP conducted the third of our four annual aerial waterfowl surveys in the Mississippi Delta. These surveys are along randomly selected transects and are conducted between November and January.

While the survey does not offer a complete count of all waterfowl, these estimates provide an accurate index of waterfowl abundance throughout the Delta.

This information is regularly used by both MDWFP and hunters to identify key wetland habitats for waterfowl and to track responses of waterfowl to changes in weather and habitat.

Duck hunting surely has its ups and downs. There are plenty of early mornings, late nights, banger hunts, and hunts where it seems you're lucky even to see a duck in the air.

What in your early hunting career kept you coming back even after less-than-stellar hunts? What fueled your passion for waterfowl hunting despite the hardships you encountered?

In North America, the most widely recognized of such migrations is in wild birds including songbirds, rapt...

Love what USFWS does

A multi-year, and multi-partner, study aiming to fill knowledge gaps of Northern pintail hens is on-going.

An initial look into the information shows the migration routes of 5 individuals who wintered in Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Each hen left the refuge separately and migrated north to different locations, with the furthest migrator finally stopping in Anchorage, Alaska.

You can read more about the study here: https://www.fws.gov/story/2023-06/northern-pintail-telemetry
