I just checked my work e-mail. I guess there was a MAJOR earthquake in Morocco. I don’t have clients traveling in that area so I was unaware of that event. Anyway, my host agency Travel Edge has assembled a 24/7 support team to assist any clients traveling to or planning to traveling to Morocco at no additional cost to the clients. Later today I have a client leaving for a trip to Iceland and the story of how this trip came together is a great example of the value an EXCELLENT travel agent adds to your vacation experience.

Two weeks ago this client was referred to me by a friend and fellow travel agent. The client wanted a last minute trip to Iceland (departing today) and was feeling overwhelmed because they needed to get this trip booked and didn’t have the time to research everything and make the trip happen.

So, after talking with the client for about 35 minutes on the phone, I explained my process to them and what the fees would be to book the trip. Understanding that we were in a time crunch, I immediately got to work brushing up on my knowledge of Iceland to I could understand the geography, unique circumstances of Icelandic travel, and anything else of note I would need to pass on to the client.

Within 12 hours I was able to create an itinerary with flights, hotels, and suggested tours and activities. Within 36 hours, I had all the minor adjustments to the itinerary worked out to the clients satisfaction and the entire trip booked. In less than a week from initial contact I was able to send the final e-mail with confirmations of early check-in at the hotel and pick up times and locations with all of the tour operators on this trip.

There are a couple different points that illustrate the value an excellent travel agent has.

First, I am part of the Travel Edge Network of travel agents— the largest privately owned luxury travel agency in North America. Within that network, I am also a part of a team of 7 agents from across the US and Canada who collectively work together sharing our unique talents, interests, and specialties to provide the absolute best experience for our clients possible. This is how I was able to get the referral for this client. The referring agent had a lot going on with their client list and wasn’t 100% comfortable with booking a trip of this type. They know that the trip the client was looking for was something I enjoy and am good at organizing. So, together, we were able to create an unforgettable experience for a client that had never used a travel agent before.

Second, I was able to use my knowledge, skills, and all the tools at my disposal to confidently organize a 5 day trip that my client was very happy with in about 12 hours time. My skills were able to alleviate all the stress of making this trip happen so the client could focus on the excitement of there upcoming adventure.

Lastly, I was able to access exclusive lists of contact information for each of the vendors on this trip to communicate the clients travel needs and confirm every detail of the trip saving the client an inordinate amount of time. I was able to present the client with all the final details of their trip in one convenient e-mail giving them confidence and piece of mind.

This weekend was a busy one for me! One of the many things I accomplished yesterday was completing my ”continuing education” with the Disney College of Knowledge to maintain my Disney Expert status. Half of my training yesterday was focused on their newest product— Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. This is a 2 day fully immersive experience complete with cabins on a starship, missions completed with the assistance of an app, and special Star Wars regalia available for purchase before during and after your experience. Last week I had the pleasure of booking flights for a client going on a month long adventure that included stays in Turkey, Jordan, and Canada making this a somewhat complicated itinerary. The client, being a savvy consumer, sent me a spreadsheet with the details of the flights they wanted and pricing from Expedia.

Now, because I am able to book directly with the airlines based on their LIVE inventory I was able to to quote them a price that was $100 more than Expedia, sell them an actual available seat, offer them 24/7 Flight support with a dedicated toll free access number, AND. add in my planning fees.

Being the super knowledgeable travel professional that I am, I was able to recommend that they choose a different flight connecting in a different city on the way home saving them $600 on the cost of their flights with very similar departure and arrival times to the original proposed itinerary.

Not only that, but I was able to offer them semi-refundable tickets instead of the fully refundable tickets priced out on Expedia saving them a further $3000 on their trip!

I share this story to illustrate two points. The first is that Expedia’s (or any other OTA’s) pricing may be a little cheaper on first glance, but that lower dollar amount lacks value in the form of customer service. Expedia will show you data and that’s it. They won’t take the time to get to know YOU as a traveler and they won’t suggest the best options for YOU. I (or any other good travel agent) will listen to what you want, learn about what you value in a travel experience, and thoroughly research options that will suit your needs.

The second point I want to make is the value a good travel agent brings to your travel experience. I touched on part of this with my first point. To expand on that, On-Line Travel Agencies (OTA’s) like Expedia often with with consolidators who contract with vendors to buy x ammount of their product at a negotiated rate below market value. They often don’t have access to real-time inventory that a travel agent has. When you book with a travel agent, your reservations are made directly with the vendors. Meaning, when I book a flight or hotel, I can see exactly what is available at the time of booking. This makes it far less likely that you will fall victim to an overbooking situation. AND if something does go wrong, guess what, you have an expert on your team to handle the situation quickly and easily for you.

So, next time you’re thinking about a vacation, call, text, or e-mail your favorite travel agent— me!
