Southwest to Begin Offering DOT-Required Vouchers

Southwest Airlines beginning April 30 now must provide a transferrable voucher worth at least $75 for any controllable cancellation or delay that causes passengers to reach their destination three or more hours after their scheduled arrival time, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.

DOT voucher requirement for Southwest extends from the investigation into December 2022 schedule meltdown. The SWA vouchers will be layered on top of DOT's new refund requirements for the U.S. airline industry as a whole.

Ground Stop Lifted for Alaska, Horizon airlines

SEATTLE — A ground stop advisory issued by the Federal Aviation Administration for Alaska and Horizon airlines has been lifted.

The ground stop was instituted at around 7:50 a.m. Wednesday, but not for a reason you might think.

“Alaska Airlines asked the FAA to pause the airline’s mainline departures nationwide,” the FAA said in a statement.

KIRO 7 learned the stop was connected to a problem with a weight and balance system.

Lufthansa Ground Staff Strike to Disrupt Major German Airports on Tuesday
Travelers can expect disruptions at several major German airports on Tuesday as ground staff at Lufthansa strike amid contract negotiations with the German carrier.
The strike, which starts at 4 a.m. local time on Tuesday and runs through 7 a.m. Wednesday will impact travelers at Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Cologne and Stuttgart airports. Verdi, the union that represents those workers, is calling the move on Tuesday a “warning strike” as it continues to push for higher salary increases for its 12,000 Lufthansa ground worker members.

The strike is the second major strike from Verdi in February alone.

Thousands Disrupted as German Airport Workers Strike

There is more travel misery at German airports today.

Ground staff working for Lufthansa walked out at five airports, causing hundreds of flight cancellations and delays.

The airline says it could impact up to 100,000 passengers.

Verdi union members at Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, and Duesseldorf airports walked out early on Wednesday due to an ongoing pay dispute.

It affects check-in, ground handling and maintenance operations.

Only about one in five flights are expected to run at the two busiest airports, Frankfurt and Munich.
