When hiking,

As we head into the 2024 visitor season, a friendly reminder that the plane wreckage near Waterrock K**b was removed last June. Please do not hike to the crash site. The site where the crash occurred holds a fragile ecosystem and years of visitors coming to the location have destroyed many plants and caused unnecessary injuries. Less foot traffic since the wreckage was removed has allowed the flora to begin taking hold in the area once more. Please do your part and by staying only on authorized trails.

Looking for a beautiful day trip while staying at Two Creeks? Check out Lake Glenville!
❤️❤️❤️

A North Carolina lake located in a mountain rain forest? Lake Glenville is just that, being the highest elevation lake east of the Mississippi. The lake, waterfall and the surrounding area is about as gorgeous as you'll find in the Carolinas.

Panther Top Tower open to public for fall color viewing

Murphy, NC, October 20, 2023— For those looking for a unique view of the fall colors, the Panther Top Tower will be open to the public on October 28-29, 2023, and November 4-5, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The 30-foot tower on the Tusquitee Ranger District of the Nantahala National Forest provides spectacular views of the Unicoi, Snowbird, Valley River, Tusquitee, and Georgia Blue Ridge Mountain ranges.

During the fall leaf viewing hours, the gate at the junction of Forest Roads 85 and 85A will be open allowing visitors to drive to the western most tower in North Carolina in the southwest corner of the state near Murphy and Hiwassee Lake. The parking lot at the tower can accommodate several vehicles. U.S. Forest Service volunteers will be onsite to answer questions.

“Panther Top Tower is a very significant historical structure and is my favorite place on the Tusquitee Ranger District,” states Chad Cook, District Fire Management Officer. “We recently completed renovations—painting and installing new windows and flooring—on Panther Top Tower a few months ago.”

The tower was erected in 1940 and was operated by the Forest Service until sometime in the 1980’s when it was operated by the North Carolina Forest Service. The blizzard of 1993 destroyed all of the phone and power lines servicing the tower. The utility companies refused to replace them, so the tower was no longer operated on a regular basis. By this time the population of the county had grown enough, and the 911 system was initiated, so the tower was no longer needed. Today the tower is used in periods of high fire danger and is a popular visitor destination.
