I never thought that one of my best travel experiences would be a slap on the leg by a mountain gorilla in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda! Of course, it was a baby gorilla who wanted to show me all about vine twirling. Ian and our friends experienced how gentle, playful and familial, “nearly human” are these with knowing eyes and kindred spirits. There’s been 100 babies born in the past years. Poaching in Rwanda is now at zero and tourism and advocates like Ellen DeGeneres play a big part! All things are possible! While in LA, the amazing Aussie Chef Curtis Stone along with South Australia hosted Ian Swain and me at his Aussie style restaurant, Maude named in honor of his grandmother. Even Americans would like the way he prepares vegemite seen here in this photo. Outstanding beyond words! Curtis, when are you opening another Maude in Philly? Please?!!... your new PBS show looks amazing! Our Swain Destinations clients always rave about the amazing wines and unique tastes of South Australia that we show them.

We attend the G'Day USA event as guests of Tourism Australia.com last weekend and Ian Ian Swain, and all other Aussies were beside themselves when Colin Hay and his wife Cecilia Noel sang “Land Down Under!” Of course, there are no words for how awesome is Olivia Newton-John with her bff, John Travolta singing with Delta Goodrem “Still Call Australia Home.” Our good friend Craig Wickham spoke about the amazing happenings in Oz after the fires and Haley Baillie (along with Phillipa Harrison) who sang with us in this video is excited about rebuilding her baby, Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangaroo Island that was lost in the fire just weeks ago. How about the Aussies?! Love them! This island continent that is as big as the USA has a small population of folks with super cool accents OY, OY, OY!, have a wild spirit, incredible resilience and amazing optimism. If you can get there to experience this tremendous feeling of kinship, now’s the time to visit the “Land Down Under”and Swain Destinations has some great deals now btw… and 5 Seconds of Summer new song, “Red Desert” is soooo great! Enjoy!

We landed in Sydney on New Year’s Eve in time to board one of our Swain Destinations charters for the SydneyHarbourBridge fireworks. Here’s a few seconds of the beginning and end of the fireworks show sprinkled with a little revelling! The fireworks are amazing beyond description as are our travelers and dear friends who joined us for the night. 2020 is the year to bring joy to as many people as we are capable!

The very gracious Lin-Manuel Miranda, rocked... that is rapped the House with the incredibly talented cast of Freestyle Love Supreme at Booth Theatre with an amazing performance. The show is great! Jimmy Fallon showed up for a hilarious bit about his one Nicole Kidman date with the Super Mario Brothers. Thanks American Express for a stellar evening!

Yesterday morning my Mom surprised me with my favorite cake, her amazing “chocolate roll” In anticipation for my bday today. She also gave me the gift my Grandparents gave her and Dad from their homeland, Czechoslovakia that holds a fun childhood story. This bday we are in the hospital together bonding like the day of my birth, as we wait for them to take her to surgery for a necessary but only a day procedure. Prayers welcome. 🙏 She just finished singing the Penn State anthem with the nurses and is brightening everyone’s day here. Is there any wonder why I want to be with my Mom on my birthday? To just brighten people’s day, what a perfect bday wish! Thank you Mom and all so much for bday wishes! Love, Joy, and light!

A special family moment with the opportunity to pet a Komodo Dragon in Cairns, Australia at the amazing Hartley's Crocodile Adventures.There are only 350 breeding females left in the world so very endangered and they are unique. This is a snapshot of the funeral Ian and I attended at Arlington Cemetery for Lt. Colonel Dennis Scully who received full honors for his service to our country. It is impossible to come here and witness this tribute and not have reverence for the heroes who serve our country now and have in the past, like Lt. Col. Scully, who is now laid to rest among the staggering amount of other heroes, men and women, who put their lives on the line for the freedoms we celebrate on the 4th of July. Thank you Anne Scully and your beautiful family for this blessing.

We had the honor of meeting with the first female President of Ethiopia, her Excellency Sahle-Work Zewde at the Presidential Palace built by Emperor Halie Selassie. It will soon be a museum for all to see. It was exciting to hear about and witness the beginning a a new era of sustainable development for Ethiopia for future generations with tourism as part. A moment of Ethiopian Zen before the finale of Game of Thrones from the iconic church of the Ethiopian people whose patron Saint is the Dragon Slayer, St. George.
We experienced the chanting of hundreds of priests at the Unesco site in Lalibela. Ethiopians believe in the 10th century BC, King Menelik I, the love child of King Solomon and their Queen of Sheba, brought the Ark of the Covenant to Ethiopia to protect it from invaders. Each of the thousands of churches in Ethiopia have a replica of the Ark of the Covenant within their walls. The original is said to be in Aksum but no can see it but the high priest.
They also have additional books in their Bible that talk about the fallen angels and the churches are covered in icons with a special devotion to St Mary.You will also find the star of David in the church, and in the surrounding towns, 10,000 people descended from the original Hebrew tribe that came with King Menelik I. Ethiopia has never been colonized and when it was invaded by the Italians for a brief period during the second world war, the soldiers did not see the churches hidden in the mountains so perhaps the Ark of the Covenant remains hidden somewhere here. Ian and I recently returned from experiencing the wonders of Ethiopia. Our company, Swain Destinations is a member of USTOA who was invited by the Ethiopian Airlines and their government to bring travelers to see the treasures of their country. There are SO many and we most certainly did, starting with the people. Everywhere we went, we were drinking the best coffee I HAVE EVER HAD...and dancing! As you will see in this little clip, ya gotta jump for joy and keep your shoulders loose!

Really proud of BFF Mary, who celebrated 25 years of bringing Nicole Miller fashions to Philly with an Exhibition at Drexel University. If you are in Philly, definitely check it out. I met Mary that many years ago when Ian bought me a Christmas present from her Manayunk Store. Luckily, I needed to exchange it. Thanks to Mary, I became way more fashionable on the outside and experienced her proving beyond words that giving back to the community is the best part of fashion. I also got to know her sister from another lifetime, Nicole Miller and Nicole’s “bigger than life” partner in NM, Bud Konheim, who, suddenly this Spring, moved on to make waves in his next life, leaving us with treasured wisdom and memories. Sending a big heart filled with love to envelop all Moms around the world who love and nurture their precious children, whatever it takes. Personally to my #1 Mom, the matriarch of our family who you will find daily doing something for someone else yet still keeps an ever growing family super close, my mother-in-law, Mum who makes us so happy and is always up for a fun time together, our beautiful daughters, Malinda and Diana who are the most amazing caring, fun and talented mothers, thank you for the joy of our 3 loving grandsons, my wonderful husband, Ian for our 6 incredible children, our amazing kids for bringing 4 more (so far) new children to our family who are as wonderful as they, my 4 sibling sisters, our harmonies still sound so great when Mom is playing her accordion, especially after a cocktail😉, Nakiema, an amazing Mom who came to my life about 17 years ago with more lovely grandchildren, and my Sisters from different Mothers along with their children who are part of my village. Wishing you all experience a wondrous moment in some way today!
