Chicago at dusk with the historic Wrigley Building at the forefront.

“The Wrigley Building is so recognizable, it hardly needs an introduction. It stands proudly where Michigan Avenue crosses the Chicago River, a luminous white beacon known the world over as a beloved symbol of Chicago’s preeminence in architecture and commerce.” Description courtesy Chicago Architecture Center

Dear Chi Tours fans,

This has been a trying time for all of us. We have no doubt that we all will bounce back from this even stronger. In addition, Chi Tours will not be laying off or furloughing any of our amazing local guides. Our local guides are in the process of creating virtual tours of Chicago that we hope to share with all of you soon.

In the meantime, please continue to practice 'social distancing' and follow all hygienic recommendations from state and federal health authorities.

All the best.

\ Chicago, “The City that Works” /

The story of Jane Byrne, Chicago mayor from 1979 to 1983, has always been a fascinating tale. Byrne came to power in an upset election. She defeated the incumbent and Chicago-machine mayor Michael Bilandic, who was reeling from his administration’s terrible response to the ‘Blizzard of 1979’. Byrne was no outsider herself though. She cut her teeth working for Richard J. Daley as the only woman in his cabinet.

Byrne was not only the first female mayor of Chicago, but she was also the first woman to serve as a mayor for a major U.S. city. Her accomplishments and blunders are still felt today. It was under her term as mayor that the city launched ‘Chicago Fest’ (renamed ‘Taste of Chicago’), renovated Navy Pier, & created the Museum Campus. She also was marred with various controversies, such as dealing w/ CTA, teachers, and firefighters strikes & many Chicagoans felt that her move into the Cabrini-Green housing project was more of a publicity stunt than an attempt of curbing violence in the notorious public housing project. Not to mention the sexism and double-standards she had to face as mayor.

J. Nicole Brooks’ ‘Her Honor Jane Byrne’ at the Lookingglass Theatre Company will take a look at Jane Byrne’s legacy through the lens of her stay at Cabrini-Green in 1981.

📚HER HONOR HISTORY📚

Jane Byrne was born on May 24, 1933 in Chicago. She was inaugurated as the first female Mayor of Chicago on April 16, 1979. During her term, Byrne lived in Cabrini-Green for a little over 20 days in 1981. She died on November 14, 2014 and is survived by her daughter, Kathy.

"The City in a Garden takes its title from a translation of the city of Chicago’s motto, Urbs in horto, and hearkens back to Hyde Park’s roots as a retreat from city life. It also delves into the history of the major parks that surround the neighborhoods: Jackson Park, Washington Park and the Midway Plaisance. Hansen seeks to inspect the “place-ness” of the area by taking inspiration from the individuals who lived there during its development."
