“Reindeer Tree” in nearby Mentone, AL:-) According to Doreen Crow Walters, “This misshaped tree is at a local cemetery in Mentone. I've heard different stories of how it came to be shaped as it is, so I won't say definitely that I know, but it's possible it's an Indian marker tree. Native Americans often bent trees over to mark their paths. Anyway, it's now a reindeer thanks to some anonymous resident!”

During their lunch break today, some of the landscapers had fun climbing on our boulders. One even found a pit cave on the undeveloped land next to our property! It actually had two separate entrances—both vertical.😳 This is the best time of year to explore the woods because the snakes are pretty inactive.

The landscaping has begun! Here is the “before” photo. We’re creating a back patio area with pavers, a retaining wall, plantings, and a great fire pit. This is Izzy:-) She’s a Bernedoodle—Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle. Isn’t she she just the sweetest thing?!?! Izzy will be celebrating New Year’s Eve at Fox View Cottage this year. Yes, we are a dog-friendly property! Guests can bring up to two dogs. Our yard isn’t fenced but the cottage is out in the country on over eleven acres of land. We *might* have three cars drive by all day and they move slowly because our road is packed gravel. Dogs (and their owners) love it! And with all the wildlife we have, there is an endless assortment of interesting smells for puppies to savor;-)

This is some very pertinent information as we are nearing the annual peak time of year for deer movement. We see a lot of deer on our property but since we’re on a gravel-packed road and can’t drive terribly fast, we really don’t have to worry about hitting them in our neighborhood —but it’s still a big issue when driving on nearby paved roads and highways. Now is the time to be especially alert for deer!

Why during fall? This time of year is peak deer activity season, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division.

Look who I found chilling out on our back deck!!! Harmless juvenile rat snake. He was only about a foot long. These guys are good to have around—they’ll keep your rodent population in check. This is the first snake I’ve encountered since I became interested in snake identification. So glad I knew enough to not be scared:-))) I recommend this Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/172919513384978/?ref=share
