Scientists have updated their forecast for the current solar cycle, which usually lasts about 11 years. Solar activity is now expected to peak earlier and to be stronger than previously thought.

From the inbox:

"We want to thank you all for a wonderful trip this past week to ANWR to see the caribou migration. The trip truly exceeded our expectations. It is impossible to describe to our family and friends how impressive the caribou numbers were in addition to the 3 bears, wolf, musk ox, birds and wildflowers.

The food was wonderful and our guide incorporated our gluten food allergy/sensitivity in creative ways. It was very appreciative.

We loved our interactions with everyone in our group, having so much in common and all the laughter. We have made new friends.

Please extend our thanks to Jeremy and Daniel at Wright Air for scoping out the caribou herd and their expert flying.

Thank you again,

Rich and Cathie "

The never ending beauty of the Arctic!
This is a satellite image of the Kongakut River flowing into the coastal lagoon yesterday (5/19). The tundra and ocean are still snow covered creating beautiful contrast with the fast melting river. Crazy to think the tundra will be covered in flowers next month when we paddle through this area!

We received a wonderful email this morning from a woman who just returned from a week in the Arctic with us!

"What a great trip...I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth and easy everything went, just like clockwork. Although it did rain every day, it didn't prevent us from doing anything, as there were clear periods too. Temps weren't as cold as I expected and bugs weren't bad. Food was WAY better than I imagined it would be. Andy did a great job of keeping us safe, interested, entertained and well-fed, without ever seeming to "manage" us.
Of course we were thrilled that we saw hundreds of caribou RIGHT IN OUR CAMP! But that was kind of the icing on the cake.
This is the first time we've ever been on a guided trip. I have always avoided them because I didn't want to have to be on a program - go here, do this, do that at such and such a time. I was happy our trip was not regimented at all.
It has been my lifelong dream to see Alaska, and to be in the Arctic wilderness, and to see so much territory up close in the little plane, was really exciting.
Maybe we will come again sometime.
Hope the rest of your summer is great,
-Jan"
