LaBelle Fossil Camp is an adventure-based, environmental education program for youth ages 8-14 years. We strive to provide dynamic, one-of-a-kind, hands-on experiences that incorporate STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) to increase critical thinking and problem-solving skills , while also focusing on the importance of nature and being outdoors. At LaBelle Fossil Camp, we utilize FUN and ADVENTURE to encourage positive development of the next generation of leaders, educators, innovators, and creators.

Each day will include a hands-on fossil talk featuring different fossils, an eco-adventure through different parts of the Caloosahatchee, and a fossil hunting excursion aboard the S/V Anhinga II - a 27ft Catalina sailboat. Campers are 100% guaranteed to find fossils, and will even take some home to keep!

Our campers learn to work together and communicate, TEAMWORK!, as they learn basic boating safety. Throughout the day campers monitor water quality, collect weather data, learn about river ecology, discuss the area’s ancient and recent historical events, observe wildlife, and even create art from clay found along the river banks. There is a heavy focus on promoting and instilling environmental stewardship.

Our first ever Spring Break Fossil Camp will be held Tuesday, March 15 and Thursday March 17 from 8:30am- 3pm.
LaBelle Fossil Camp is an educational adventure-based, environmental education program.

$40/per child per day or $70/child for both days

We will meet at the launch point, LaBelle City Dock, which is right next to the Barron Library and LaBelle Bridge.

We will take our campers traveling via canoe, kayak, and sailboat, back through time along the Caloosahatchee River, stopping at different sites to hunt and identify fossils. Our campers learn to work together and communicate as they learn about boating and water safety. Throughout the day campers monitor water quality, collect weather data, learn about river ecology, discuss the area’s history, observe wildlife, and even create art from clay found along the river banks. There is a heavy focus on promoting and instilling environmental stewardship.

All campers must:

•arrive prepared for bugs, rain, heat, sun, and ADVENTURE!
• bring their own snacks, LUNCH, and plenty to drink each day
• wear close-toed shoes that can get wet. (Some also chose to bring a change of clothes and a towel.)

We also recommend bug spray, sunscreen, hats (tight fitting in case of wind) and sunglasses.

**NO FLIP FLOPS, SANDALS, OR CROCS ALLOWED due to safety issues

Campers will be climbing aboard boats, offloading onto a dinghy, walking along rocky and sometimes slippery river banks, etc. Campers also need to be prepared for heavy wind and rain while we are out in the field.

NOTE: Life jackets must be warn at all times throughout our time in the field (both on and off the boat). Campers may bring their own life jackets, but are responsible for keeping track of their own belongings. We have plenty of life jackets for campers to use if they don’t have one of their own.

Watch: Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida has released a powerful video showing the toll of COVID-19 and urging residents to get vaccinated as pediatric cases have sharply risen.

02/09/2021

COVID-19 UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 2, 2021:

As of today, Lee Health has:

- 596 COVID-19 patients isolated in our hospitals (inpatient).

- Of these patients, 12 of them are children being treated at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.

- Yesterday, we had 60 new COVID-19 hospital admissions and 64 COVID-19 discharges.

- 50% of our ventilators and 3% of our ICU rooms are available for use. We have 86 COVID-19 patients on ventilators and 113 in the intensive care unit.

- This morning, census was at 101% of staffed operational bed capacity.

** Lee Health had 13 deaths yesterday. We delayed reporting this number to confirm the accurate total because the timing of our reports can change these numbers. We will resume the daily reporting of deaths with tomorrow’s numbers.

OTHER UPDATES:

For just the second time in the last month, Lee Health has discharged more COVID-19 patients than we’ve admitted over the last 24 hours, and this is the fewest number of COVID-19 patients we are treating since August 20. We hope that this slight downturn will accelerate and continue over the next few weeks.

While this is promising, we are still not out of the woods. Lee Health hospitals are still at capacity, and we are seeing more patients than ever. This is why it remains as important as ever to get vaccinated if you haven’t already. Widespread vaccination in our community can help prevent another surge like the one we are currently experiencing, especially as we move closer to our seasonal months.

Lee Health offers COVID-19 vaccines for anyone 12 and older at its walk-in Community Vaccination Clinic, located inside Gulf Coast Medical Center. It’s open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and there is no cost for the vaccine.

COVID-19 UPDATE: AUGUST 13, 2021:

Lee Health COVID-19 Hospitalizations

It is important to understand that hospital capacity fluctuates day by day and even hour by hour.

Due to the drastic increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations, we are working to streamline an automated process to gather data on the percentage of our patients who are unvaccinated. We hope to have this new process in place soon.

Please do your part in helping fight this pandemic. Find a place to get vaccinated today, if you are eligible. The vaccine is in plentiful supply and available on almost every corner – at Publix, Walgreens, CVS and other retailers. We welcome you at Lee Health’s vaccine clinic, which is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. You can make an appointment online or walk-in. Getting vaccinated today could be the difference between this surge lasting only weeks instead of months.

500 square miles of toxic cyanobacteria on Lake Okeechobee and moving down the Caloosahatchee River from the Moore Haven Lock at 2000 cubic feet per second. Forty miles of the Caloosahatchee now has a significant bloom. If this isn't a disaster in the making I don't know what is.

Cyanobacteria bloom may be building on Lake Okeechobee. NOAA reporting 50 square mile cyanobacteria potential. A significant bloom on the Lake could increase the risk for a similar bloom in the estuaries as the ACOE is trying to recede the Lake from relatively high levels. This is beginning to look like the same scenario from May of 2018 where the ACOE had to initiate a major release into the Caloosahatchee that precipitated a historic cyanobacteria bloom and perhaps increased the intensity of a co-occurring red tide. Another lost summer?
