🏝️ The Verde Passage is a Strait that separates the islands of Luzon and Mindoro in the Batangas province of the Philippines. The strait connects the South China Sea with Tayabas Bay and the Sibuan Sea beyond.

The passage is known as both the Verde Passage and the Verde Island Passage as the Verde Island is located in the center of the Strait. The 1.14 million hectare passage is extremely rich in marine biodiversity, in fact, it’s among the richest areas in the entire Coral Triangle and one of the most productive ecosystems in the world.

In 2006, a team of marine conservationists declared the Philippines a “Center of Marine Biodiversity” in the world and Verde Island Passage as the “Center of the Center of Marine Shorefish Biodiversity”.

Many threatened species, which include sea turtles like hawksbills, olive ridleys, green turtles; humphead wrasses, giant groupers, giant clams, and the rare red fin wrasse are present in the Verde Island Passage.

Are you ready to explore the Verde passage?

🌏 Destination of the week: the Philippines... to be continued

The Philippines, an island country of southeast Asia in the western pacific ocean, is an archipelago consisting of 7100 islands and islets lying about 800 km off the coast of Vietnam.

The Philippines is part of the coral triangle, a marine area in the pacific ocean that is considered the amazon of the sea due to its rich marine biodiversity.

Diving in the Philippines will treat you to incredible sights and experiences like swimming with thresher sharks in Cebu, exploring world war II shipwrecks in Palawan, and discovering a Unesco world heritage site in Puerto Princesa.

This week we will focus our attention on the Batangas area. 😀

🛥️The 27 meters long Seadoors Philippines diving liveaboard boat is designed for scuba diving and underwater photography. She is equipped with Nitrox, an oxygen booster, and rebreather Megalodon.

She has 8 comfortable air-conditioned cabins with private showers and toilets, and hot water. A cozy air-conditioned living room for relaxation, an outside dining room. Also a sundeck, and a Solarium on the bow.

The diving platform provides enough space for personal arrangements where you can gear up comfortably and safely. You can store the personal material in individual drawers. The ship also provides two compressors with a nitrox mixer, booster, and rebreather from Megalodon. Diving takes place from two 8-meter-long fiberglass chase boats. Access to the chase boat is easy from the diving platform. Freshwater tanks, a workbench for photo and video equipment, an outside fresh water shower, and warm towels are given after the dives.

The Liveaboards are operated in three areas: Tubbataha, Visayas, and the Sulu Sea. The quality of scuba diving in the Philippines exists because of the huge diversity of corals and the quantity of fish, from big sharks to little pigmy seahorses.

✨ Anda is among the province of Bohol’s fast emerging hot spots. A 14-kilometer long reef attracts divers to some small dive centers along the coast from Anda to Guindulman, off the east coast of the island of Bohol.

Only four dive shops in the area and not so many tourists make Anda one of the few stil untouched places in the area. 29 fantastic and very varied dive sites await every diver. Almost 500 species of coral and over 1,000 species of fish were registered here.

Steep wall divers, macro divers, night divers and drift divers can also find what they are looking for here. The drop-offs have depths from 20 to 40 m. Many divers also call the walls the reef of the 1000 snails. The variety of species in the underwater landscape is enormous.

Are you up for a new dive challenge? 😀

🌟 Just a 30-minute boat ride away from Alona Beach in Panglao is the tiny island of Balicasag. It is located 6 KM Southwest of Panglao, Bohol.

This island is a marine sanctuary since 1978. Balicasag Island is one of the top diving spots in the Philippines for scuba diving tours for certified divers because of its sea turtles and shouldn't be missed when planning your diving tours in the country. Not only turtles, but you can see schools of jacks and barracudas.

The best dive sites of Balicasag Island 6 are: Diver’s Heaven, Marine Sanctuary (also known as Rico’s Wall), Black Forrest, Royal Garden, Cathedral, and Rudy’s Rock.

Have you ever been to Balicasag? 😍

🐢 Apo (which means “grandson” in the local dialect) Island is a marine sanctuary located off the south-western coast of Negros Oriental. The island is situated about 8 kilometers off the coast from the municipality of Dauin, about 17 kilometers south of Dumaguete City.

Once destroyed by unsustainable fishing practices, Apo Island has bounced back to become one of the best diving destinations in the Philippines. After being bombarded daily with blast fishing in the 1970s, Apo Island was closed off and declared a marine reserve where locals managed this community-based protected area.

When it comes to corals, Apo island has 400 of the 450 species found in the Philippines. That’s a 88% of the country’s coral species concentrated around this small island of Dauin, Negros Oriental. This is further complemented by its fish diversity where the reefs of the island house 650 species of fish.

The main season for diving in Apo Island, as well as in Dumaguete, Dauin and the rest of Negros Oriental is from October to May.

Are you ready for a dive in Apo Island? 😀

😍 Scuba diving in Dauin is considered to be one of the best muck dive sites in the Philippines.

Most dive spots along the coastline are located in Dauin, about a 20-minute drive south of Dumaguete, and can be explored via shore entry. All dive sites in Dauin are marine sanctuaries and protected. There is no fishing allowed inside these areas.

Here, the sandy bottom (which happens to be black volcanic sand) is full of the most bizarre marine life. The list of things to see when you are muck diving in Dauin is endless!

You can scuba dive in the Dauin all year round. But the best time to go is from November to May.

Best sites around Dauin are San Miguel, Thalatta house reef, Basak, Mainit & Poblacion.

Are you ready to explore the dive sites in Dauin? 😍

🦈 The island of Malapascua is very famous for Thresher Sharks. Here these beauties can be seen on a regular basis.

The Thresher Sharks live usually in deep water and are very rarely spotted in shallow water. In Malapascua, they come up to around 20m in the water first thing in the morning to get rid of the parasites on their skins. The best chance to spot the Thresher Sharks is at Monad Shoal dive site early morning.

Thresher sharks have big eyes, a small mouth, large pectoral fins, first dorsal fin, and pelvic fins. They have a small second dorsal fin (near their tail) and a**l fins. Their most noticeable characteristic is that the top lobe of their tail is unusually long and whip-like. This tail may be used to herd and stun small fish, upon which it preys.

Have you ever seen a Thresher Shark? Do you want to see one? 😉
