'Tis the season for crowded airports, delayed flights, and confusion at the baggage claim. When you add young children into the mix, flying over the holidays gets even more stressful.
We've found a few ways to make flying a (little) easier. Maybe.
If you can, try a redeye. The more your kiddos can sleep, the faster the flight will go. For the kids, anyway. We've yet to meet a grownup who can sleep comfortably in an airline seat.
Screen time is A-OK. At least on the plane. Games, their favorite toys, sticker books, coloring books, any activity that can hold their attention and be swapped out fairly regularly. Bonus points if screen time is a forbidden fruit. It will make the trip seem all the more exciting, and they won't even be aware you're simply trying to keep them from noticing you're only 45 minutes into a 4 and a half-hour flight.
Grab an aisle seat. If your little one needs frequent potty breaks or diaper changes, or if you need to walk them up and down the aisle, you don't want to be scooting past a (hopefully understanding) seatmate every few minutes.
Gum is great. Takeoffs and landings can be murder on young ears, especially if the child doesn't get why their ears hurt. Chewing gum can relieve the pressure somewhat.
Do everything early. The last thing you want is to be in a hurry to check in and clear security and make your flight. Just relax and take your time.
Just go with it. Don't be worried or embarrassed about your little one being "that child" on a plane. Almost everybody else has had the same experience and will actually be remarkably understanding. And if not? You'll never see any of the rude or disapproving passengers again anyway, so just sit back, relax, and try to enjoy the flight. You'll be home for the holidays soon enough.
