Moxie Mountain Guides Climb with Moxie. Ski with Moxie. Give with Moxie

Based in Ridgway, CO: Guiding locally & worldwide.
(1)

Moxie Mountain Guides is a mission-driven guide service owned and operated by two women, AMGA/IFMGA Mountain Guides; Sheldon Kerr and Kristin Arnold. Based in Ridgway, CO, Moxie offers ice, rock, and ski guiding and instruction both locally and around the world. Moxie focuses on guiding for good; instructing from empathy, focusing programs on those who have been left out, and building participant

skill sets rather than dragging people up peaks (though we can also do that 😉). Through progressive pricing, partnering with affinity/advocacy groups, offering scholarships with industry support, and meeting users “where they are” (financially, physically, socially, and in skill set), Moxie works to unravel the prevalence of injustice, oppression, and hegemony in the outdoor space. We believe climbing and skiing have the power to build powerful relationships, foster independence, engender confidence, and promote belonging... and mountain guiding must be a part of this project.

We are just wrapping up a month in the homeland of the Nuwuwu, Nuwuvi, and Newe Sogobia Peoples.

While here at Red Rock we’ve shared ropes with people from so many backgrounds and identities: LGBTQIA2S+ climbers, climbers of color, neurodivergent climbers, plus size climbers, indigenous climbers, women climbers, AAPI climbers, Spanish-speaking climbers, young WASPy climbers, old grouchy local climbers, German climbers, and disabled climbers (just to name a few!).

We helped guides prep for SPI Exams and AMGA Rock Guide Exams; taught a Women’s Rock Guide Course and an Advanced Rock Guide Course; mentored guides/athletes/climbers who run the All In Ice Fest; and had a hell of a time climbing with some of our favorite long-time clients from Washington, California, and Connecticut.

Thank you to people who belong to these lands for having us here. We’ll be paying our rent by donating $10 per client per day to Native Women’s Wilderness. Their mission is “to inspire and raise the voices of Native Women in the Outdoor Realm. To encourage a healthy lifestyle within the Wilderness. To provide education of the Ancestral Lands and its People.”

From our friends We are deeply disappointed by
USA Climbing's newly announced Transgender Athlete
Participation Policy, which includes deeply harmful language and regulations that are rooted in anti-trans ideals.
The new policy includes several requirements for trans athletes to "prove" they are trans, which not only places an enormous time, financial, and emotional burden on trans individuals, it also invalidates diverse trans identities by asserting there is a specific, expensive, time-intensive, emotionally taxing path a person must follow to be "recognized" by USA Climbing as
"legitimately" transgender.
These requirements significantly increase the barrier to trans participation in USA Climbing's events and are wholly counter to USA Climbing's espoused goal of a respectful, safe, and harassment free environment.
We stand firmly against these policies and all forms of trans-exclusion.
Help us take action!
If you have experience in advocacy, grassroots organizing, or public relations please DM us or email [email protected].

“The body is not an apology” -Sonya Renee Taylor

For Alex Malloy, inclusivity outdoors means taking up space, no matter your identity, or how far into that journey you may be, and doing so unapologetically. In order to build the outdoors we talk about, it’s on each of us to examine our internal bias, from who we think goes outside to what a body in motion looks like.

We wanted to showcase individuals from Project Alpine, like Alex, as they share their experiences navigating the outdoors and thoughts on how to build inclusivity. These individuals are not influencers, nor are they sponsored athletes. These are humans who climb and ski the same mountains you do. These are humans who are ready to see change in the outdoors and hope you consider things from a different point of view.

Check out the full film featuring Vera Undertow, Ramya Kanlapuli, and Alex Malloy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2P7dVcWeiEs.

Project Alpine was a 2-day guided backcountry ski experience aimed to elevate women, non-binary, and trans athletes while advocating for equitable wages for guides. Thanks to Arcteryx Boulder, 70% of these individuals were able to participate through a 100% funded scholarship. Additionally, our trip helped support higher than average wages for our IFMGA guides, Kristin Arnold and Sheldon Kerr. Kristin and Sheldon are also creating their own women owned and operated guide service, Moxie Mountain Guides.

We've got two spots open in our Ouray, CO 3-day women's ice climbing clinic Saturday Feb 18 -Monday Feb 20. Come for one, two, or three days!

The "true cost" of admission is $1170 per climber, but all of our programs feature progressive (pay-what-you-should) pricing. We've had many generous climbers donate funds this winter, so WE CAN SUBSIDIZE ANYONE'S PROGRAM COSTS (or charge you extra!). Pay $700, pay $400, pay $1500, or pay nothing.

Give us a call (970)239-1869 or send us an email [email protected] and let's fill those spots!

This article from really hit home for us. Does it hit home for you?

Humans come in all shapes and sizes. All bodies are welcome here. Climb as you are. Climb with Moxie.
