Located on the Vermont border between Montreal and New York City, and a short drive from Saratoga Springs to the west, Manchester, Vermont, to the east, Glens Falls to the north and the Capital Region to the south

, Salem is a beautiful place to live and raise a family, centrally located for business and tourism. Salem’s lush, rolling Washington County hills surrounding the village are home to the best maple syrup in the spring, the most succulent sweet corn in summer and breathtakingly vibrant fall foliage, thanks to our unusually high concentration of sugar maples. We boast three of the county’s four covered bridges, all of which span the clear waters of the Battenkill River. Legendary for its trout fishing, "The Kill" is also a popular playground for canoeists, kayakers, tubers and rope swing enthusiasts. History buffs will find the Revolutionary War Cemetery, the final resting place of 101 soliders (more than any other in the county) with a total of 1,034 stones dating back to 1769. At the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, we are committed to assisting all its members and nurturing the growth of businesses new to Salem area, whether newly formed locally, long established or looking to relocate. We help smooth the process of moving to Salem with introductions to real estate brokers, banks, contractors and any other service required to make your business a success. From fine and performing arts to fiber arts, antiques, and agriculture (including pick your own fruit and vegetables, to hand reared and organic meat, cheeses, and a dairy that bottles its own milk for sale as far south as Manhattan), Salem is a unique destination and a nurturing place to call home.

Featured Business of the Week!
Yellow Door Inn
72 West Broadway
Salem, NY 12865
Stay/Lodging/Airbnb

The most gorgeous little country getaway, surrounded by art and nature, is located on the first floor of a Victorian home on West Broadway. This lovely home highlights its original details, like stamped tin ceilings and hardwood floors, welcoming guests with warmth and character. The 1900s home was previously owned by Frank Wright (who ran Frank Wright’s Wagon Works down the street) and was painstakingly renovated by owners Klara and Greg Hall.

While Klara grew up in the area, Greg is from England (they met while working at a fabrication/design company in Amsterdam, NL.) and both fell in love with the house, the area, community, and potential of Salem, settling in, putting down roots and recently welcoming Miss Fayla Maeve to the family. The Yellow Door Inn has been hosting travelers from around the world and all walks of life to Salem since opening December 2021, and guests are encouraged to head out and discover all the area has to offer!

The Yellow Door Inn is rated in the top 5% of homes on Airbnb as well as Superhosts, ensuring a carefree relaxing visit with attentive and responsive hosts that is appreciated by their guests. With dozens of 5-star reviews, your family and friends will want to try this lovely local! “ This is just the coziest airbnb we have ever stayed in! The interior is so uniquely styled and has everything we need to be comfortable. ‘ “…this is a truly amazing place and was perfect for us - thanks very much Greg and Klara- if you need to be in Salem this is the place to stay and if you've not visited Salem before you should - it's a gem.”

More on health and mood from BreakFree Medicine by Dr Sarah LoBisco

With so much coming at is, it's hard to remain positive, but one can be hopeful.

According to VBO:

"Hope is the belief that your future will be better than the present and that you have the ability to make it happen. It involves both optimism and a can-do attitude.

American psychologist Charles Snyder developed the “Hope Theory,” which focuses on developing strengths and positive traits rather than healing weaknesses or diseases....

Research finds that positive emotions may help build resilience against depressive responses in times of crisis. The research observes that hope differs from other positive emotions because hope can be experienced in both safe and dire circumstances...."

Hope offers many mind-body benefits, including decreasing pain, decreasing isolation, uplifting mood, and boosting immune function.

In my previous post, I discussed “How Essential Oils Can Change Our Brain and Health for the Better.” It explores how essential oils impact emotions and support both neurological theories and contextual models of emotions:

On the biochemical level, essential oils can impact brain health, signaling, and function. They have been shown to modulate neurotransmitters as well as protect the brain from oxidative stress.

On the physiological level, essential oils and certain fragrances have been shown to alter brain wave patterns, affecting concentration, focus, relaxation, and emotions.

Through their multi-system effects on our brain and body, essential oils can also alter our behavior which can result in more positive social connections leading to more positive self-care choices and behaviors.

Some essential oils to inspire hope include:
Citrus oils to uplift
Heart oils: jasmine and neroli
Parasympathetic calming: clove and distilled lemon to stimulate the vagus nerve
Limbic reset oils: frankincense, sandalwood, and helichrysum which all contain sesquiterpenes that can cross the blood-brain barrier and help with brain plasticity.

Surprise Guest Performers at Fort Salem Theater - get your tickets now!

🎭 We have a couple of special surprises up our sleeves for opening weekend of The Drowsy Chaperone! Here are three special guests, each making a one-night-only appearance in a featured role.

Friday, 9/27, 🎶 Mr. Zach Eastman, Salem Central School’s Band and Choral Director returns to the FST stage where he used to perform in plays and musicals often. We’re so excited to welcome him back for another bow!

Saturday, 9/28, 🎭 Dan Evers joins us all the way from Pennsylvania, where he serves as the Asst Professor & Director of Theatre at Mount Aloysius College. Dan is a professional actor a nationwide resume, who just happens to be the real-life husband of Rebecca Paige, who plays “The Chaperone.”

Sunday, 9/29, 🎨 Dave O’Keefe steps back onto the stage, where he’s often seen (or scene-stealing!) performing alongside the Susi Shoes dancers. Dave is a Salem-based artist known for his incredible gallery work, but when the spotlight hits him, it’s clear he was born to be on stage!

🎟️ Limited tickets remain for this weekend’s performances, so book fast.

🚨Please be advised: this production may cause laughter and the desire to cheer and applaud. Proceed with caution. 🚨
