Species Spotlight: Sparkling Violetear
Colibri coruscans

Another new hummingbird I saw on my expedition with ! The gardens of the Tambo del Inka hotel was a great place to spot them!

This large hummingbird and sparkly hummingbird is common in the Peruvian Andes, but also found in other parts of the Andes throughout the Andes up to 13,000 ft! They’re metallic green overall but have a patch of violet-blue on their cheeks and belly. They’re found in a variety of dry forest and shrubbery with scattered flowering trees. Don’t their their shimmery beauty fool you, they very aggressive and dominant in the hummingbird world! They would often chase of smaller hummingbird species, claiming territories of flowering plants for themselves!

Phainopepla perched on the top of a mesquite shrub.

This glossy black cardinal-like bird is found throughout southwestern U.S. and Mexico. They are the only U.S. representative of the family Ptilogonatidae, also known as silky-flycatchers. The Phainopepla is a short distance migrant, moving from low elevation Sonora desert in the spring, to chaparral and arid-woodlands during the summer. Their main diet is berries and have even developed a symbiotic relationship with the Desert mistletoe, check out my lasted reel about this fascinating bird and plant symbiosis!

Happy World Sparrow Day!

I’m highlighting the Striped-headed sparrow, a common and beautifully patterned sparrow found along the Pacific slope of Central America. It’s has a bold black and white striped head with a rufous back and a cinnamon colored under tail coverts and tail. They are found in dry grasslands, tropical savannas, rocky slopes, and the edges of fields. These birds are known for being social where they vocalize in large groups and are the only New World Sparrow to cooperatively breed! Up to seven individuals can attend to a nest! Was amazed to see this tropical and highly social sparrow species!

Tropical kingbird, overlooking the hills of the Pacific Slope.

These common and bright yellow bellied flycatchers are widespread across central and South America. You can find these birds along roadsides, fields, savannas, and the edges of tropical lowland forest. They feed mostly on flying insects that they capture in aerial pursuit, but also eats seeds and tropical fruits. It looks very similar to the Western and Cassin’s kingbird but can be identified by it’s entirely brown tail and has a brighter yellow and white throat. So cool to see another flycatcher species!
