Enjoying the fall outdoors in my cozy sweater and bean boots!🍁Being outdoors during this time of year always inspires me because the vibrant alterations of the deciduous leaves and the annual migration of birds signals a climatic change in the environment and the preparation for a new season. Whatever changes or new beginnings in our lives is for the preparation for what is yet to come! How does the fall outdoors inspire you!

A new favorite bird of mine is the Brown noddy! There were thousands of these beautiful tropical seabirds on Garden key and Bush Key island perching on trees, nesting, and flying over the sea! These birds are pan-tropical, meaning they are found in tropical oceans all over the world on offshore islands. They weren’t shy at all and didn’t mind me getting close to acknowledge their beautiful white fading cap, and dark brown plumage! I hope I’m able to see these birds again!

With all the commotion of sea birds on Eastern Egg Rock, I couldn’t help but notice these tiny birds that flew within the patches of meadows on Egg Rock, the beautiful Savannah sparrow. These are small, streaky sparrows with a bright yellow eyebrows. They breed in open Fields’s and meadows of Northern North America, but I find it very interesting that this population inhabits an offshore island and is sustained by island plant community, providing habitat and food.

birding drip in Maine! I had a wonderful experience being a Junior instructor at Hog Island Audubon Camp in Bremen Maine! Throughout the week, we had many bird watching trips scheduled every day! From spotting Scarlet tanagers and Canada warblers in a bog forest, to watching Atlantic puffins on rocky offshore islands. What better way to prepare for Maines outdoors than wearing L.L. Bean! I was dripped out in my coordinating outfit from the L.L. Bean x Todd Synder collection! I wore my Classic Navy Packable Anorak with recycled Nylon, Khaki Camo Organic French Terry Camp shorts, Khaki Camo Baseball cap, Khaki Camo backpacked, and Navy Trailfinder waterproof hiking shoes.

It’s Black birders week y’all with the them of soaring to greater heights and we are starting off with ! My name is Isaiah Scott and I’m a bird watcher, nature enthusiast, scientific illustrator, bird photographer, social media influencer, and outdoor brand ambassador just to name a few. I’m a rising sophomore at Cornell University major in environment and sustainability with a focus on ornithology. I love being in nature. It is my home, my haven, my safe space. Nature is healing for the mind, body, and soul. It connects me with my African heritage, my ancestors, and the creator of all life. Bird watching is my way fostering my relationship with nature. I’m excited to see and share post from others members of the Black birding community! Let’s soar to greater heights!

It’s Endangered species day and I wanted to share about the Northern bobwhite, a quail species found throughout eastern North America that has a distinctive whistling call! But unfortunately it’s population has declined by 85% since the 1940s and has been extirpated in many parts of it range due to the loss of its prairie habitat, pesticides, agriculture and over hunting. This bird is continuing to decline and in order to restore bobwhite populations, there’s need to be improvement of grassland with native plants management of flat pine woods with prescribed burnings. This with also benefit other grassland birds facing decline such as Grasshopper sparrows, Eastern meadowlarks, and Painted buntings. Let’s keep birds off the endangered species list!

Pine Flatwoods, one of my favorite habitats. This fire dependent ecosystem made up of Southern slash pines, Saw palmettos, and a diversity of wildflowers is important for many birds and wildlife throughout the south. I got a Lifer Northern Bobwhite quail which was a target species for the trip! I also saw Eastern blue birds, Black vultures, Swallow-tailed kite, and many warblers like palm warblers, Pine warblers, and Northern parula! Was a great day to end time in Tampa!

It’s my birthday y’all!!! I can’t believe I’m turning 19! It was only five years ago when I started birding watching and it has been the best decision I made in my life. I’m grateful and blessed for all of the great opportunities and success in my life through birding and I’m thankful to the lord to see how far I’ve come on my journey. It’s Black history month and this is a reminder to put your binoculars down and learn the Black history of your birding spots. Some of our favorite places to bird also have a horrendous history of enslavement. I’m birding around the tabby slave quarters at a Kingsley Plantation, part of Timucaun Preserve. This was once a 1,000 acre plantation owned by Zephaniah Kingsley, who married a Senegalese princess named Anta Madgigine Jai in 1806. Anta was freed under Spanish rule and she oversaw 60 enslaved Africans, which grew sea island cotton, sugar cane, and other crops. The 25 out of the 32 remaining tabby cabins represent the community Women, men, and Children that lived here and connected to their natural environment. After 150 years, the forest has regenerated from the cotton fields and is now habitat for owls and migrating song birds. In order to appreciate the natural beauty wherever you bird watch, it is important to know its history.

Happy World Wetlands Day! I’m featuring my one of the first lifers of the year, the American Avocet! It is a large and elegant wading bird of the stilt family. They have long legs, a black-and-white body, and a upturned beak used to sweep in shallow water. They migrate to Florida during the winter, where they can be found in intertidal mudflats, tidal lagoons, and rice fields.
