An old abandoned Long Island Rail Road track between Port Jefferson and Wading River is being transformed into a nearly 10-mile bicycle and hiking trail.
Come out Sunday, May 15th and join Venture Long Island and support the NY Blood Center by hiking either 3, 5, 11, or 32 miles on the Long Island Greenbelt Trail. PM us if you'd like to join our team. Everyone is welcome!

Venture Long Island (VLI) is an active trip that focuses on enjoying active adventures on the beautiful lands and waters of Long Island for six days. Unlike other trips guests are in control of how much or how little you want to do as we have different options built in our tours to suit your needs. Even if you were born on Long Island this tour will take you to beautiful places that you never knew existed.
Day-to-Day Itinerary
Day 1:
Arrive in Freeport – Long Island, N.Y.
In the evening, you will meet your fellow travelers and your guides at The Freeport Inn & Marina*, www.thefreeportinn.com where you will be staying for the night. We will have our welcome dinner together at the hotel’s lounge “The Patio,” alongside the marina. During dinner we will review your planned adventures through Long Island. If you arrive in Freeport early, you will have time to visit Freeport’s famous nautical mile on your own.

*Freeport is a 40-minute train ride from New York City and a 30-minute train ride from New York JFK airport.

The day-to-day itinerary is designed take you on an unforgettable tour. One day one you will arrive in Freeport, Long Island, N.Y. and spend your time exploring the lands with a park ranger that tell you how the how this park was transformed from a landfill into a beautiful preserve that hosts farm animals and birds. You will also check out the brand new boardwalk Robert Moses State Park and the lighthouse in the area.
After Freeport you will head to Fire Island’s Sunken Forest, one of the last maritime forests on the eastern seaboard and then head to The Crow’s Nest hotel in Lake Montauk where you can view the beautiful sunrise over Montauk Point Lighthouse. At the state park located on the eastern tip of the north fork of Long Island you can either decide to hike, bike, kayak, paddleboard or just relax on the beach. The natural beauty earned designation as a national natural landmark in 1980 for such attractions as the rare maritime forest and the marine wildlife. Bird lovers will be in awe as you may spot Osprey, Great Blue Heron, Egrets, and Crowned Night Herons that thrive here.

Long Island Tours:
Our tour includes famous landmarks, including the Big Duck and Bald Hill. We will see the many farms, wineries and breweries as we tour the east end. We will be visiting the Atlantic Ocean and The Long Island Sound, as well as the smaller bodies of water including the rivers, bays, and lakes found here. As we traverse the island, by boat and van as well as our own power, we will cover two counties, both eastern forks and two other islands (Fire Island & Shelter Island) via ferry boat.

Venture Long Island supports St. Baldrick's funding of childhood cancer research. We shave and donate in celebration of our cousin, Tiny but Mighty, Elaina.
On Sunday we enjoyed the first day of spring with a local bike ride. The ride proved challenging at times with many steep hills, but it was fun. This biking/hiking trail is well maintained and paved the entire way.

Day 3 of Venture Long Island tour: Sunrise at The End was breathtaking and we had the perfect weather for it. We then took a quick hike along Shadmoor State Park bluffs. We travelled through Shelter Island and landed in Orient Point for a challenging but rewarding kayak trip in Hallock's Bay. Next we took a pit stop at our hotel before embarking on The North Fork Wine Wagon. What a great time ! Visiting 3 different wineries and The Greenport Brewery all by the power of our group bike. We finished the day hanging in the pool and exploring the restaurants and shops of Greenport. It was a perfect night to enjoy the meteor showers .
Day 2 of Venture Long Island tour:
You cannot beat starting the day with breakfast and coffee on the beach! Soon after, we hiked out about 2 miles along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. After a quick swim, we packed up again and hiked the trails through The Sunken Forest National Park. A short ferry ride back to Long Island and we were quickly on the kayaks at Carmen's River. A lunch stop at Wertheim National Refuge was well deserved before a walk through the visitors center. We then headed to Montauk. We window shopped in the town and made our way to our hotel, The Crow's Nest. The Crow's Nest overlooks Lake Montauk which we enjoyed on the paddle boards. The group surprised me and we popped a champagne bottle to toast the tour. Some of us then took a detour and ran a 5k along the bluffs of Shadmoor State Park. We all came together again and enjoyed a lovely dinner at the dock yard. Stay tuned for tomorrow's adventures.

Day 1 of Venture Long Island tour:
Began the day hiking through Norman J. Levy Park where we learned about and enjoyed the recycled landfill. After a quick drive, we hopped on the bikes and despite the down pour appreciated the ride to the famous Jones Beach Amphitheater. Next, we headed toward Robert Moses and toured the Fire Island Lighthouse, boathouse and lens house. Then we embarked on our final leg of the day, the five mile hike through the beautiful mini towns of Fire Island. We made a pit stop at Castway's in Ocean Beach for some refreshments and then made our way to the Fire Island Hotel. We finished the adventurous day with a dip in the ocean and a wonderful dinner at Flynn's.

Having some fun on VLI's newest addition, our SUP. We had a great day enjoying the water and practicing self rescues. We even managed to pick up some local conch mollusks for dinner.
