Given the successful completion of the DEEPER Retreat 2021, I'll be taking my annual break away from social media.
It's been difficult running a travel business during COVID, so before I go I would be remiss to not thank you all for your support over the past year. Many blessings to you and yours as we head into 2022!!
PERSPECTIVE
My intention for the 2021 DEEPER Retreat was to help retreat attendees widen their perspective of the world and of themselves. When I look back at this experience, I am grateful for the shared adventures, conversations, and laughter that enabled all of us to more deeply understand ourselves and others. Much love to everyone who attended this year - the DEEPER Retreat can only happen when we break out of our daily routine and take time to not just talk about self improvement, but to actually do the work of embodying it.

Day 5: Spa Time
After a week of outdoor adventure and personal reflection, it was time to finally let go and relax. Special tanks to Luna Volcan Spa - definitely one of the best spas I've ever been to!

Hike up to the Refuge Point on Cotopaxi Volcano...The wind, rain and hail couldn't stop us from climbing up to 16,000 ft!

We end the DEEPER Retreats "Experience Tour" with free time. While I've tried my best to pack the entire week with a curated set of the best activities that Baños has to offer, one final experience you'll get when you travel with DEEPER Retreats is free time.
Sometimes, we just need to take a pause, be by ourselves, and just enjoy the view/moment. That said, you'll have the ability to truly customize the experience YOU want to have at the DEEPER Retreat.

I often go on hikes and am excited to get to the end. So much so that I often forget to stop and take a look at how far I've come and where I'm at in the present moment.
The hikes in Ecuador though are pretty intense - and so they force you to stop! LOL Luckily though there is incredible nature to keep you company in the present moment. I took this picture during my scouting trip back in August and am so glad I did. I remember taking the pic, looking at the scenery, and feeling proud of how far I had climbed up.
I find that the way I do one thing BECOMES the way I do everything else. So for me hiking (and stopping) has become a way for me to learn how to be more kind to and proud of myself. Hiking helps me to reprogram how I navigate myself through the world when I'm back at home in the daily grind.

I'm grateful today for the ability to travel and to see the world. Not only does it expand my awareness of the the immensity of the place we live in, but it gives context to the who I am with respect to the greater whole.

Experience #19: Hike to the Cotopaxi Glacier
For those of you ultimate thrill seekers, weather permitting, we will head up to the refuge point on Cotopaxi Volcano, take a brief break, and then head up to the glacier at close to 16,000 feet in elevation! This is the highest elevation I've personally been at, and I'm sure it will feel like such an accomplishment for you to get up there as well.

Experience #18: Baños Waterfall Tour
While the marquee waterfall we'll be visiting is the famous El Pailon del Diablo, we're carving out time during our week in Baños to check out many of the other spectacular waterfalls within the city limits.
Baños is at the convergence point between the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Rainforest so you'll get to see some incredible waterfalls at various elevations, surrounded by lush greenery - don't miss out on this tour!

Personal development requires ACTION.
You can't just talk about personal development, you've got to enact it in your body to the point you can feel it in your bones. This belief of mine is the reason why I make sure to include a hike to the top of a summit at every DEEPER Retreat.
Personal development isn't something you discuss and intellectualize over brunch, it requires some sort of measurable ACTION that needs to be repeated over and over again in order to create a habit. And the habit of developing your potential on a personal or professional level is what creates the positive, long-lasting change we seek for ourselves.

Experience #16: Toachi Canyon View Point
Toachi Canyon was pit stop on our way to Quilota Lake, but this view point is an impressive destination in its own right. This amazing canyon totally has Grand Canyon vibes but minus the tourists! haha

After climbing up to the refuge point of Cotopaxi Volcano, you'll get experience the serene waters of the Limpiopungo Lagoon in the greater Cotopaxi National Park. The fresh air, wildlife sounds, and view of the volcano really gives you a multi-sensory experience that encapsulates what Ecuador is all about.

I know for me, I admittedly often push myself to move and to act, without taking the time to reflect and think about what direction I'm going in and WHY.
DEEPER Retreats is essentially a MINDFULNESS retreat. Retreat goers take 7 days out of their regular daily schedule to consider the important questions: What really matters most to me? Are my actions in alignment with who I am at my core? Am I living my best life?

Having traveled to numerous Latin American countries, I've found that Ecuador has some of the best local handicrafts and art. I seriously make room in my luggage before I leave the US to bring back alpaca fleece blankets and clothing because Ecuadorian products are so unique and such high quality!
I can't wait to bring group here to experience these artisanal markets!

DEEPER Retreats isn't just about fun external adventure - we make time for retreat goers to experience internal introspection as well.
The Baños basilica, located in the middle of the city center, is the perfect setting for self-inquiry: there's an immediate sense of peace and connection to your purpose that you get when you step into this Spanish colonial sanctuary, and we're definitely making time on this trip to allow people to experience this space.

There are 20+ amazing experiences you get when you register for the DEEPER Retreat. Midway through this presentation I'd like to share with you what I think is the most meaningful benefit you get from signing up - you'll give the gift of a smile :)
I've always been insecure about my smile. Not because I don't like my teeth, but because I often get complimented on my smile when I know I haven't done anything to deserve the praise.
My parents are immigrants from the Philippines and my dad told me that he came to the US not knowing anyone, barely speaking English, with just $300 in his pocket. I didn't think much of that story as a kid, but now as an adult, I think that's pretty insane! It would be like me moving to Brazil (not knowing the language or having any connections) and then trying to start a life there and build enough wealth to raise a family.
I'm not sure how my parents did it, raising three boys in a foreign country, but somehow they managed to save enough money to pay for braces for me when I was nine. Ever since they've come off I've often been complimented on my smile and deep down I really do feel uncomfortable, again having done nothing to earn it.
Every time I travel, I widen my view and understanding of the world - and more importantly, how I see myself fitting into the greater whole. And so in 2018, when I launched DEEPER Retreats, I wanted to create a business where retreat goers could experience the joys of travel but also could make an impact and meaningfully connect with others all over the world.
That's why since the inception of DEEPER, I've donated a portion of profit to help those living in the homeland of my ancestors - the Philippines. In years past, I've used funds to buy school supplies for students and water tanks for remote villagers, but I feel called this year (and for future years) to focus resources on helping people receive dental treatments. DEEPER Retreats doesn't make enough right now to give full braces to a substantial number of people, but one day I hope this business grows large enough to give lots of rural Filipinos more extensive, longer-term treatments.
Because DEEPER Retreats was unable to run a trip in 2020, this year I used a portion of the profit from my other business Yoga Masterminds to help give free teeth cleaning/extractions to over 20 villagers near the city of Bacolod. Special thanks to my cousin Marie Chua and her team for performing the cleanings and surgeries.

OVERTHINKING creates the illusion of control. While thinking and planning is a necessary part of being a responsible adult, overthinking is really just a covert way to feel in control of a situation. After a certain point, over-planning does you no good and progress can only happen when you ACT. That's why I LOVE cliff jumping (this was from 15 feet up). You can't THINK your way into a jump, you just have to DO it: in fact, overthinking often decreases your chances of a successfully leap! Jumping into a body of water forces you to get OUT OF YOUR HEAD and INTO YOUR BODY.
