In areas where wild horses roam, herding is often done by helicopters, which can terrify and injure the animals. An Oscar nominee is among those lobbying Congress to ban the brutal practice.

Hello and Happy Friday!

As we go into the weekend, I have a request for all of you!

Have you helped Stallion Alluvium? We drive by every morning to see him and it is heartbreaking to see him locked in the pens!

Today I am asking that you take a moment to take action and send emails to demand that 2019 Stallion Alluvium be released back into the only home he has ever known! You can take action here: https://secure.everyaction.com/4bIr7BLQ60SHxHhJLAI_-Q2

If you are not yet aware of Alluvium's story - you can read all about it in our blog from earlier this week: https://chwha.org/2024/06/10/urgent-call-to-action-free-alluvium/

If you already took action - THANK YOU!

This weekend, please ask your friends, family, co-workers etc. to also take action. It is NOT ok that the park is setting a precedent for calling our wild horses a "nuisance" especially when all Alluvium was really guilty of doing was simply being a wild horse!

If you took action and you got a friend of two to take action, please share this post! The more people who see and take action for Alluvium, the better!

Thank you for your support and thank you for speaking up for Alluvium!

URGENT ACTION NEEDED
*UPDATE*
The preferred Alternative (1) allows for reduction in wild horse populations (AML) in any area (HMA) where wild horses overlap with sage grouse habitats. That is 25.3 million acres out ot the 26.9 million acres managed four wild horses. (See comments in the original post for links and tables.)

BLM has an open comment period for the 2021 Greater Sage-grouse Land Use Plan Amendments.

In this proposed plan there is an alternative (not the preferred alternative, but still included nontheless) that states the horses and burros that are currently managed on Primary Habitat Management Areas (PHMAs) for greater sage grouse (GRSG) would be zeroed out.

Even though this is not the preferred alternative we have GOT to be their voice. Talking points should include those demanding science. such as:

1. BLM must provide current scientific proof that impacts to sage grouse population or habitat have been definitively found to be from wild horses. Not just grazing animals, not just livestock, not just general damage to an area with wild horses/burros where there are also other mitigating factors but the horses are conveniently blamed. But studies that show a specific species (wild horse/burro) impacts.

2. The wild horses and burros act would currently have legal precedence because sage grouse, while a special status species, do not have federal protections like these wild horses and burros do.

3. Any action to further protect sage grouse without a listing on the Endangered Species Act list should be that of removing livestock fencing, and livestock should be reduced if not eliminated from all GRSG habitat areas.

*Take Action*
For Colorado’s Historic Little Book Cliffs Wild Horses
American Wild Horse Conservation

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is proposing the permanent removal of 120 historic Colorado wild horses from the 36,000-acre Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Range, near Grand Junction, starting September 11, 2024.

Home to an estimated 211 wild horses, Little Book Cliffs is the only dedicated wild horse range in Colorado, distinct from a multiple-use herd management area (HMA), meaning the habitat is managed primarily for wild horses and there is no competition from livestock grazing.

The proposed federal plan allows for an initial helicopter roundup of 140 wild horses, permanently removing 120 and returning 20 to the range. It also calls for further roundups over a multi-year period to achieve and maintain a target population range (AML) of just 90-150 wild horses.

Proposed actions include adjusting the s*x ratio to 50:50; returning 20 captured mares and stallions back to the range; relocating wild horses to other parts of the range to maintain herd genetic viability; and applying a range of population control methods to animals captured during roundups. Methods allowed by the plan include flexible intrauterine devices [IUDs], or humane fertility control, such as PZP.

Local volunteer group, Friends Of The Mustangs, has implemented a PZP humane fertility control program for over 20 years, the last six without roundups, until this current proposal was introduced.

Building on the Friends of the Mustangs foundation, Little Book Cliffs provides an opportunity to support and expand the on-range fertility control model, consistent with the intent of The Colorado Wild Horse Project (SB23-275), which was signed into law by Governor Polis, at Little Book Cliffs, a year ago this month.

The state-sponsored project oversees a $1.5m budget for on and off-range management projects, including the expansion of humane fertility control efforts in Colorado.

Instead of expending federal tax dollars to round up the Little Book Cliffs wild horses by helicopter and funnel them into the BLM's holding system, where 64,000 animals are currently stockpiled, the agency should:

1. Collaborate with the Colorado Wild Horse Working Group on a modified wild horse management plan to expand the existing humane fertility control program in Little Book Cliffs and reduce the proposed helicopter roundup operation and its associated cost and public concern
2. Revaluate the AML to allow for a genetically viable herd using up-to-date science and range data to guide management decisions
3. Expand fertility control using only the humane and reversible PZP vaccine.
4. Abandon IUDs within the suite of population control methods
5. Ensure any roundup and on-range handling (such as roping) is carried out in strict compliance with the BLM's Comprehensive Animal Welfare Guidelines
6. Work with local organizations, like Friends of the Mustangs, to find good adoptive homes for any removed mare before they ship to BLM holding facilities.

The Colorado Wild Horse Working Group and the $1.5m funds allocated by the state to improve wild horse conservation are a model opportunity to supplement and build on local efforts, not see them swept aside by a blunt and unaffordable federal helicopter removal tool.

Please take action before the June 15th deadline and sign on to American Wild Horse Conservation's comments by using the link below!

Hello and Happy Wednesday to everyone!

It has been a CRAZY week! We have had tours every other day for the last week!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending the day with an interesting young man and I wanted to share that story with you today.

Xin came to visit us from China!

He is currently studying in North Carolina. He took a trip to South Dakota and through Trip Advisor found us and decided to venture up from Rapid City on Tuesday so that we could take him to see the wild horses and other wildlife in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. This morning, he headed back to South Dakota to catch his flight back to North Carolina.

We had a lot of really good conversations, that is for sure!

He was very impressed with our camera and told me that his dad has a similar one. He wanted to bring it with him to the USA, but it was too big to take with him. He asked me if he could take some photos with my camera, and I said sure! We always believe that the day belongs to our clients, and we strive to make the day as memorable as possible in whatever ways we can. Xin asked me if it was ok if he took pictures throughout the day with my camera and asked if I could email them to him later. He wanted to share the photos with his parents when he talked to them last night. How could I say no?!

The highlights of these experiences we share with people is watching the excitement in their faces either when they see wild horses, bison or that extraordinary view after we hike up Buck Hill or Wind Canyon or anywhere else in the park. Xin was no different. In fact, there may have been a bit more oooo’s and ahhh’s than usual yesterday.

Attached to this post are a few of the photos that Xin took with my camera to share with his family in China. I hope you enjoy yesterday’s view from his perspective.

I am not sure who had a better experience yesterday, him or me.

Have a great day and thank you for your support!

Don’t forget! If you haven’t booked your Back to Nature with Chasing Horses tour, summer and fall dates are filling up fast! If you are interested, please email us at [email protected] or send us a PM.

Hello and Happy Sunday! We hope you are enjoying your holiday weekend!

We had the pleasure of spending time with Steven and Ty who came to visit us all the way from Tennessee! North Dakota was Steven's 50th state and we think he saved the best for last for sure!

They have been reading about what has been happening with the horses over the last 2 years and all the work we have been doing with Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates to save this herd!

In spite of the un-forecasted intermittent rain, we had a great time in TRNP today! The horses, as usual, did NOT disappoint. A special thank you to Stallions Trooper and Gunner and their bands for being on cue today 😉 lol

Have you booked your Back to Nature with Chasing Horses tour for this year? Our calendar is filling up and we have had to start a waiting list for some dates!

If you are interested in taking a trip through Theodore Roosevelt National Park with us this summer, please send us a PM or email us at [email protected] for more information and to check availability.

Thank you for your support and have a great weekend!
