People often ask me how to know for sure if an image was created by artificial intelligence. So I marked in the attached photo (in the red circles) some clues that make me suspect that it's a fabricated photo, although it's not possible to say with absolute certainty in this case.

This morning's History Lesson: Long before planes, trains, automobiles, or even rudimentary roads for that matter, water transportation was the only feasible way to move people and goods around the Great Lakes region in the most efficient manner. With 10,322 miles of shoreline, the Great Lakes presented ship captains with numerous hazards to navigation an encounter with any one of which could spell disaster for a voyage. Hence the need for the hundreds of lighthouses that were eventually established to serve as aids to navigation. Bordered by eight U.S. states and Canadian province of Ontario to the north, the Great Lakes remain home to over 350 active lighthouses which is the highest concentration of these historical landmarks in North America. Commercial maritime shipping remains important to the economy and growth of the Great Lakes region. However, modern electronic aids to navigation employed aboard ships today have rendered the old lighthouses redundant for the most part. Still, lighthouses remain as magnets to travelers drawn to their often scenic locations and interested in the maritime heritage of the Great Lakes. - Wayne S. Sapulski, GLLKA Historian

A 120 year old Ojibwe needle set made from moose antler is a fine example of indigenous craftsmanship and tradition. Created by the Ojibwe people, a Native American tribe in North America and Michigan/Upper Peninsula/Isle Royale, these needle sets are typically used for embroidery and creating beautiful fabric works.

Moose antler is commonly utilized by Indigenous people to craft traditional tools and items, and creating needle sets is part of this tradition. By using moose antler, a natural resource abundant in their region, the Ojibwe not only honor and make the most of their environment but also preserve their heritage and artisanal techniques.

Each Ojibwe needle set is typically handcrafted with meticulous care and dedication. The needles often feature carved or etched traditional Ojibwe patterns, making each set unique and visually striking. These needle sets are not just practical tools but also symbols of indigenous culture and art, showcasing the skill and creative spirit of their artisans.

Living in the Michigan, we are no strangers to snow and especially lake effect snow. Have you ever wondered how lake effect snow forms? Let’s dive in!

Lake effect snow bands form when cold, arctic air moves over the relatively warm & open waters of the Great Lakes. Hearing this one may ask why we don’t see lake effect snow every time its cold outside? Great question!

Cold air is only one part of a much larger equation. The key factor in lake effect snow formation is having an area of low pressure such as a surface low. This area of low pressure when combined with cold, arctic air creates lift over the relatively warm lakes. The relatively warm waters heat the air just above causing it to rise creating surface instability. When this warm, moist rising air meets the sub-freezing air above, it rapidly cools and condenses into clouds. Because we have an area of low pressure over the great lakes region this allows the newly condensed clouds to continue to grow until they are large enough to produce precipitation & in this case snow.

These heavy bands can produce snowfall rates over 5” per hour as they are full of moisture! These lake effect snow bands usually continue until the area of low pressure moves away from the lakes with high pressure (stable air) taking its place. This is why we don’t always see lake effect snow every time the air is cold outside as we have to have a reason for the air to rise.

The Great lakes region of North America is the lake effect snow capital of the world as no where on Earth do these ideal conditions come together like they do here.
