Named after one of Big Sur's most beloved pioneers, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is a favorite among both locals and tourists. A feast for the eyes, the park features seven marked trails that take travelers to tucked away coves, up to waterfalls, along miles-long creeks, through redwood-clad forests and more. Not to mention, it is one of the few areas in Big Sur where scuba diving is allowed.

The shortest and most traveled path is Waterfall Overlook Trail. Less than a mile long, the trail takes visitors to one of the most popular attractions in Big Sur: McWay Falls. The site is lauded for its beauty, and is a culmination of all geological features typical to Big Sur: The secluded beach is flanked by jagged bluffs covered in shrubs, wildflowers and cypress trees. The falls, flowing from atop one of the cove's granite cliffs, tumble 80 feet down into the cove and get swept up by the ocean. The cove is also a prime place to spot migrating gray whales that pass through Big Sur from December to February, as well as March to May. In the past, some have even come into the mouth of the cove.

Beginning in the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. "Labor Day" was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which organized the first parade in New York City. In 1887, Oregon was the first state of the United States to make it an official public holiday. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty states in the U.S. officially celebrated Labor Day.[4]

Canada's Labor Day is also celebrated on the first Monday of September. More than 80 countries celebrate International Workers' Day on May 1, the ancient European holiday of May Day. May Day was chosen by the Second International of socialist and communist parties to commemorate the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago on May 4, 1886.[5][6]

More popular among average travelers than the rugged North Rim, the South Rim is where visitors will find the majority of the Grand Canyon's most well-known activities. Attractions on this side of the Grand Canyon include Grand Canyon Village, the South Kaibab Trail, Bright Angel Trail, Mather Point, the Yavapai Geology Museum and more. Travelers can explore scenic areas and hiking trails on the south side of the canyon on foot or take guided tours by mule. Campsites are located at Mather Point and Desert View, and there is also an RV park outfitted with grills, laundry facilities and picnic benches.

Recent travelers loved the plethora of things to do and places to see on the South Rim. Families with young kids noted that many lookout areas and some paths were manageable enough for children, and visitors who use wheelchairs were thrilled by how much of this section of the canyon is accessible. Because there are enough things to do at the South Rim to keep you busy all day, reviewers recommend starting early in the day and packing sufficient food and water if you plan to do a lot of hiking. Still, there are a variety of restaurants, dining rooms and coffee shops on this side of the park, so you won't need to worry about going hungry during your visit.

But where do you start and what do you need to keep in mind during travel to ensure that things go smoothly? Let’s talk about them here!

Determine your destination – We encourage you to have a conversation with your travel professional about the wants and needs of your travel party. From there a destination recommendation for a girls or guys getaway to party is going to be completely different than a recommendation for a family or a couple. And this applies to your hotel selection too. Your pro doesn’t want to put you in a hotel overrun with spring breakers if you’re looking for a more relaxed vibe.

This will hopefully save you a few bucks too! Pricing is typically based on supply and demand, and as those in-demand dates draw closer, you’re likely to see an increase.

Once in destination your electronics and important documents should be locked in an in-room safe.
