The Historic A. C. Carter House - Where to stay in La Crosse, Wi The Historic A. C. Carter House in beautiful La Crosse, Wi , a licensed vacation guest house. I am a professional restoration designer and contractor.

I was fascinated by this home as a child. I fell in love with and purchased this home 37 years ago and have been devoted to preserving it for future generations ever since. I spent my honeymoon traveling the Mississippi River and staying each night in a different historic home, I am happy to have the opportunity to share my own historic home with others that would enjoy experiencing the now rare b

eauty and whimsy that these unique homes provided their original occupants so many years gone by. We have maintained this lovely home for over 35 years as a labor of love, and leased it furnished for executive stays and unfurnished for years. We have formed many lasting friendships with those that enjoyed their time in this unique home. We were excited to furnish the home with fabulous antiques for the use and pleasure of Airbnb, VRBO, Trip Advisor, Expedia, and other travelers! Sharing this unique home helps us to continue to restore and preserve The A. Carter House for future generations so that they too will be able to experience the lifestyle and whimsy of the American Victorian era. The proceeds from The A. Carter House also helps us to be able to fund our horse rescue project, helping to save the lives of many innocent horses that have fallen into hands of export meat slaughter dealers, to raise awareness of this terrible blood trade, and assist with adoption of rescue horses. We thank all our wonderful guests, their loyalty means so much for so many. Prepare to fall in love.

The History of the A. C. Carter House La Crosse, Wi.

The A.C. Carter House is a landmark Victorian restoration home. In the high Victorian era, both with interiors and exteriors, more is more was the rule, particularly in the A. C. Carter House. It was one of the most extravagant homes ever built in La Crosse.
This home is famous for it's original whimsical design both inside and out. During restoration we dissected multiple layers of paints and wall coverings to reveal the original tastes, patterns, and colors chosen at the time of it's construction in 1888. We then chose the wall coverings and paints to most closely match the original. We were able to locate exact reproductions of three of the original papers and even imported one of these from a museum collection in the UK.
A. C. Carter was an entrepreneur. He was a dry goods merchant, he sold home plumbing and decorating supplies, he was a home builder, and a patent medicine maker. He also owned a theater and a photography studio. He was a very colorful character and so were his tastes.
Among his most successful businesses was his contracting business. He built dozens of homes and he sold customers all the stained glass, paints, wallpapers, fabrics, rugs etc.to decorate their new homes. This home was the model home for the Victorian extravagance he was selling, and he was immensely successful. That is why the home was built with an enclosed staircase to the second floor, so that Mrs. Carter could have privacy while customers toured the home. A second small home was built next door for Mrs. Carters household staff and an equally fanciful two story carriage house (demolished in 1960) occupied most of the rear lot. All were originally fenced together as an estate.
We purchased the home, which was scheduled for demolition to make way for an 8 unit apartment building, in 1985. The Carter family had lost their fortune in the stock market crash of 1929 and the home had suffered from a lack of ability to maintain the property.
The house was accepted for nomination to the historic register in 1986, and has been celebrated for it's restoration. It was one of only two homes in La Crosse for inclusion in Daughters of the Painted Ladies and the author described the home as "one of the most delightful surprises of her tour" (which was a nationwide tour and included some of the most famous Victorian painted lady homes in the entire country).
We were not even aware that homes were being chosen again for a second book, Ms. Pomada was in La Crosse to photograph the "Pink Palace" downtown and the photographer had already returned to San Francisco when she discovered our home. She had the photographer flown back to La Crosse just to photograph our home for inclusion in her new book. This was a tremendous honor for us and for the Carter family.
A. C. Carter's granddaughter Avis lived in the little house next door, she had been widowed young and had taken care of her mother who lived in the big house for many years, until Bessie passed at age 101. They dearly loved the home and desperately wanted to save it from the wrecking ball but didn't have the resources. Seeing it restored was all Avis really wanted, but the house receiving national attention was more than she ever expected or dreamed of. Avis spent the rest of her days being the "official ambassador" for the A. C. Carter House. She loved all the attention the house received and answering the questions about her grandfather and family to tour visitors of the home over the years.
For us the house has been an enormous undertaking, a business, and a labor of love. It also brought us Avis as a bonus, we were blessed that she adopted us like family. We enjoyed almost twenty years of friendship with Avis who was just a delightful person with one of the wryest sense of humor I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy.
I put up the yay or nay photos of the house for fun, and I took some hard knocks from some. Good thing is that there are lots of people that just adore the house for what it is and we get over 90% all 5 star reviews from our guests. Out of the hundreds of guests we have had the past 3 years, only 3 have not liked something in the decor. People chose to stay at the A. C. Carter House for the experience of staying in a home as it was in 1888. Of course we took some license with the atomic age and traditional seating in the two parlors, and the glass table in the garden themed dining room, but we figured an eclectic mix in the common areas was more practical, and comfortable for our guests. The front parlor with the lemon "Jetson" couches and the leopard chaise is a shock and a favorite with our guests. The house is a gas, and we have even had guests send us fun decor items to incorporate.
We love being able to share the house with others. Some of my favorite recent reviews were:
"The Carter House is indeed an architectural treasure. It is fun staying in such a fine old house and the decor is totally in harmony with the age and era of the house. If you are looking for sparkling new fixtures, this is not the place for you. But if you appreciate atmosphere and charm, you could not do better." -Betty.
"If anyone is looking for a unique getaway in an incredibly scenic area, with fantastic hosts, this is the place! Step back in time in this gorgeous historical Victorian, tastefully decorated top to bottom with period antiques mixed with thoroughly modern, convenient, amenities for your comfort!" - Linda.
and the best was from Bonnie D. at Christmas time:
"What a grand time we had. The children were thrilled with this formal home, that had its own castle {her grandson decided the foyer and the front parlor was his castle}. We all will smile every time we think of our stay. Not only was your home a blessing , but so were you and Deano."
