This was an amazing evening adventuring out by myself with my furry protectors spring of 2024. What you don’t see here is the massive snow drifts that finally stopped my vehicles forward progress, or the 5+ large ponderosa pine trees fallen across the road that I had to throw my gear over and then belly crawl to get across. Or the swarms of flesh eating mosquitoes that were so thankful for a fresh blood meal and the absolute defeat i was feeling that i didn’t think to bring bug spray lol. Or the hanging out till midnight realizing i had to go back through all of that in the dark (I don’t actually mind) all for only 5 minutes of #northernlights #auroraborealis Worth it? ABSOLUTELY! Because the experience and journey holds as much if not more Joy than the final moment! Rearranged my schedule and changed my plans for today so I could maybe capture some more of those incredible northern lights over Mount Shasta tonight. So incredible!!!!This is video footage of the very rare aurora borealis over Mount Shasta California last night off of my canon mirrorless camera. I haven’t had the camera very long so it was a surprise to me when my little brain remembered that it does video and I’m so happy I got some clips because my iPhone was not able to capture it like it was able with a 10 second photo exposed photo that I previously posted. I am absolutely not a videographer and don’t know how to remove the noise or adjust for the wide angle distortion or even more frustrating I cannot remove the dust spot that was on my lens like I can when I’m editing photos lol. I don’t know how you video folks deal with that kind of stuff, but I digress… Even though I don’t have time today to edit any of my professional photos that I took I definitely had to get this edited and exported for all of you to be able to see what I saw. I’ve been trying to capture this aurora for years now. Thankfully yesterday a friend Todd Cory gave me the heads up that the KP index was pushing 9 which is incredibly high. This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced. For those of you saying it wasn’t as visible to the naked eye… that is somewhat true, but for those of you that stayed up after 10:30 PM you got to experience the intensity in the sky quadruple and it was brilliant! Some of that I think was from the moons light pollution finally setting and some of it from the KP index intensity. The recording devices are able to bring out a lot more detail and visibility with the long exposures but all I did to this video is brighten it up a tiny bit and adjusted to the max speed increase that iMovie would let me do. I also added my iPhone image to the very end of the video. If you zoom in you can see the car head lights going up and down Everett Memorial Highway on the mountain. I’m definitely gonna head back out tonight if the KP index is up around 9 again. Enjoy ✨🙌🏻
