We are fortunate to have some of the finest Alaskans in the state as moderators for our All About Alaskan Travel Group. These folks make a difference in both big and small ways every day.
One of these special people is Kathleen Houtz Benner.
Kathy truly is a multi-talented individual. She is an artist and an entrepreneur. She is a leader, an executive, and a volunteer. She is passionate about Alaska and all things Alaskan.
Recently, she was selected as the next executive director for the American Bald Eagle Foundation (ABEF), which is based in Haines, Alaska.
We congratulate you, Kathy, as you embark on this new adventure. We wish you all the best.
[Note: Telesa and I are members of this organization. We encourage others to join as well. Let's get behind the ABEF and help Kathy hit the ground running at full steam when she officially takes the helm in April.]
Here is a brief interview with ABEF's executive director designee to help you learn more about her and the organization she will soon lead:
AAAT: When did you first become interested in working with bald eagles?
KATHY: We moved to Alaska from Pennsylvania in 1998 when my husband was transferred with his job. In 1999 I joined the Juneau Raptor Center as a volunteer. I learned how to rescue and rehabilitate bald eagles and other birds. I was involved in doing live bird education programs in the schools and served on the board of directors in several different capacities.
AAAT: What was it that interested you most about working with bald eagles?
KATHY: Bald eagles are such large, graceful creatures that are fascinating to watch. From their nesting habits to raising their young, They are like no other bird in the sky. Being able to rescue eagles that have been injured and then rehabilitated and released back into the wild is one of the greatest accomplishments of my life.
AAAT: How does ABEF make a difference for these magnificent creatures?
KATHY: The mission of the American Bald Eagle Foundation is the conservation of the bald eagle and its habitat through education and stewardship.
AAAT: What benefits does ABEF bring to other endangered or threatened species?
KATHY: Biodiversity keeps life on this planet beautiful and thriving. Our vision is a human population dedicated to maintaining this vast diversity of species. We hope to foster appreciation and respect for the natural world in our guests by giving them the inspiration and tools they need to become effective stewards.
AAAT: Where does ABEF do most of its work? (Does its efforts reach beyond the immediate area surrounding Haines, AK? If so, where and how?)
KATHY: Visitors from all over the world visit Haines every summer via cruise ship and independent travel. They come to ABEF and learn about the importance of conservation and then they take that knowledge back to their area and hopefully pass it on. In this way, we can make a difference, one person at a time.
AAAT: Since bald eagles are no longer on many endangered species lists, why is the work of ABEF so important?
KATHY: The Chilkat Valley in Haines is a unique habitat that fosters our robust bald Eagle population. Areas like this are very important to maintaining the biodiversity of the planet. By educating people about conservation and what can happen when we do not protect these special places, we hopefully can avoid the mistakes of the past that caused bald eagles to be endangered in the first place.
AAAT: Why is it so important for people to join forces with you as members of this organization?
KATHY: As a non-profit, we rely on memberships, donations, grants and visitors to our center to support our work. Without the generosity of our many supporters, we could not remain open.
AAAT: How do we become members of the organization?
KATHY: Visit our website at https://www.baldeagles.org/member and choose between three levels of support.
We wish you all the best, Kathy, during this time of transition and as you step into this new role. We hope you will share with us often about this exciting new adventure. Please don't hesitate to let us know how we can be of assistance to the American Bald Eagle Foundation.
