News Release: North Rim to reopen June 2 for 2023 summer season

The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park will open on Friday, June 2 at 6 a.m. to mark the official start of the 2023 season. Following a record-setting snow season, this delayed opening is necessary to ensure the safe plowing of State Route 67 and allow staff to reopen visitor facilities on the North Rim.

“We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our neighbors and visitors with this delay as our partners and park staff work to open the North Rim roads, trails, and facilities safely,” said Superintendent Ed Keable.

Key changes to this year's operations include: a trail closure of the North Kaibab Trail from April 12-June 2 in the area between Cottonwood Campground and the North Kaibab Trailhead, delayed opening of the North Rim Campground and Point Imperial/Cape Royal Road. For more information, including specific operational changes for 2023, please visit: https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/news/north-rim-to-reopen-june-2-for-2023-summer-season.htm

So long to our Utah and Navajo Nation friends and neighbors! You have traveled forward an hour in time, and we won’t be able to sync back up with you until November! 🕑🕒

Planning a Glen Canyon trip soon? You might want to double-check what time it is. The state of Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving Time, so our clocks did not change. The Navajo Nation, which touches our southeast border, and Utah (most of our park's land mass) follow Daylight Saving time. Since Glen Canyon is headquartered in Page AZ, the park officially operates on Arizona time. This may bring some confusion as you approach the Utah or Navajo Nation borders. Those of us who live in Page often have to hard-set our phones to AZ time since the proximity to the borders makes our automatic clocks flicker back and forth. Also, some local businesses might use local time. Check go.nps.gov/GLCAhours for operating hours of the facilities in the park and time.gov to see what time it is where you are.

The only check-out chores we ask guests to do is wash their dishes and take out the trash. We'll handle the rest: no beds, floors, linens, or surface cleansing for you!
The cleaning fee covers all of that.

Weekly Low Water Update
January 21, 2022
Dear Partners:
In 2021, Lake Powell dropped to unprecedented low water levels and Bureau of Reclamation projections indicate it will continue to drop.
1. Bullfrog North Ramp Extension: Potential contractors attended a site visit on January 12. It is anticipated the project will be underway by February and be completed in April 2022. This project will permanently extend the Bullfrog North Ramp to reach a lake elevation of 3520-3525 feet. Use of the ramp will be dependent on lake levels.
2. Extending the Legacy Stateline Auxiliary Ramp Continues: Concrete poured on January 12 is curing for two weeks and then concrete will be poured on the other side of the ramp. Two lanes will remain open on one side of the ramp allowing launch and retrieval of motorized vessels of all sizes on boiler plate ramp extensions.
3. Dangling Rope Marina: In response to lowering lake levels, the marina will not be reopened in 2022. Park and concessioner staff are removing some marina components from the Dangling Rope location to ensure they do not become beached and inaccessible. The park, in partnership with National Park Service concessioner Aramark, is continuing to look for a way to provide mid-lake fuel service during the 2022 season, however many challenges remain. Please see the attached news release for more details.
4. Rainbow Bridge National Monument: Access from Lake Powell is significantly more difficult, due to lowering lake levels and mud and debris from rain events. The dock system and its restroom are not connected to the shore and are being moved further out to prevent the restroom from getting stuck. Boats and small vessels beach at your own risk.

Traditions are passed from generation to generation through storytelling and spending quality time with your loved ones. In moments like these it invites you to remember where you came from. It helps you to remember your ancestors and the sacrifices they made for you. To move forward, you first have to look at their past. See their resilience and let it inspire you to be the best you you can be. Remember that they blazed a difficult path. This path continues to you so that you may better walk in beauty.

Beautiful and Terrifying. When I took my workshop students up to Delicate Arch last night, we were expecting to see some smoke, but we were not prepared to see the explode over the ridge in the La Sal Mountains 10 miles away behind the arch. I have one message: NEVER LEAVE A CAMPFIRE UNATTENDED. Stupid in normal times, criminal during the drought we are in. Please keep the firefighters who are facing impossible conditions in your thoughts tonight.

"Past these towering monuments, past these mounded billows of orange sandstone, past these oak-set glens, past these fern-decked alcoves, past these mural curves, we glide hour after hour, stopping now and then, as our attention is arrested by some new wonder…"
-- Major John Wesley Powell

🛶Just remember, amidst all that gliding, that Glen Canyon is in a desert. Plenty of water, sunscreen, and delicious snacks will help to keep you wondering while you wander. 🏖️😀
