WE AIN’T IN KANSAS ANYMORE!!!

We were sitting in the marina waiting for our generator to be re-installed when this little pretty posted up. Fortunately the winds were in our favor and it passed well away from us as we had nowhere to run. Been a long time since we’ve seen one get to ground, but this is the time of year for these down here. Fret not, our Toto (Buddy) slept through the fun. Happy Friday and enjoy the start to your weekend!

Not only is Buddy the best Pirate 🏴‍☠️ Pup 🐶 ever, but he’s a damn good ✈️ airplane traveler, too! He’s had lots of practice in his 13 years … definitely has more frequent flyer miles than most of our other family members!
We got to the airport with just enough time to grab a quick bite before boarding and just as we were getting ready to pack up and head to the gate, we get the announcement that there’s a ‘small’ pothole on the runway that has to be repaired and cured before we can board. Just about an hour delay ….
This little guy immediately stopped people watching and laid down for a little snooze while we waited just a bit longer.
We are so grateful to have such a great travel Buddy! This pirate 🏴‍☠️ is something special, for sure!

Friday the 13th vibes …. This is how we started our morning…. Good news, the bird, the boat & Bill were all unharmed in the making of this video! No birdsh!t in the galley, either! And the Pirate Pup was still in bed so was completely unbothered by the event! 🤣😎🐶

Good morning from Dutch Sint Maarten. First and most important, 7 years ago today category Irma destroyed our beautiful islands, still brings up tearful thoughts and many memories. A good reminder of reality. Moving on. Today, on my birthday, I want to thank my parents for that night back in January ‘63, if not for that interaction I’d not be here to appreciate the life I have and more importantly I’d not have two amazing adult kids and I wouldn’t have Tamii and Buddy in my life, so much to be thankful for. Mom passed April 11, 2011, but dad is still kicking and a crotchety old cat loving, retired Navy commander. Been a spin, dizzy and strange at times but worth the price of admission and I’m certainly looking forward to what this next trip around the sun brings (other than less hair and more weight!)! I’ve had a few birthdays, some in s**t holes, in a foreign land, at sea, in the O.R., on call, on a football field in muck and rain, but the best is today, with Tamii and the boy, on our home, (even though we’re tied to a dock for work) recalling how this day has been spent in the past. Thankful! Cup of coffee and back to boat projects!
❤️ ❤

It was a year ago today that we lost an amazing and wonderful soul, Jimmy Buffett. He sailed off in to paradise this day last year, seems like yesterday. Forget his music, he is/was so much more than that, husband and father, environmentalist, philanthropist, pilot, oldest surfer on the beach, sailor, lover of life and people just to name a few. Today we’re a short distance from one of the islands he called home, St Barth’s, and as we reason with the hurricane season and prep for what’s gonna become Francine, we raise a toast. Never met the man, been to a few shows, but I think I know his person well enough to know that he was about people and doing right by his fellow humans and critters. What Would Jimmy Buffett Do? Think he’d show grace and compassion to all of us regardless of who we are. Thank you and bubbles up, Jimmy.

So yesterday was National Dog Day 🐾, but we had Buddy hard at work (it was a Monday, after all). But because he worked so hard on his national day of recognition, we got him a spa day today to reward him for all his efforts! We can’t say enough how much we appreciate for treating him so special today! He is most definitely looking and feeling like his sexy self this evening! Y’all, this pirate 🏴‍☠️ pup 🐶 is EVERYTHING! This boat would not be the same without this boy! 😎🥰 🦴 Don’t y’all agree that he looks so fly?!! He went from looking stressed out at work to boat dog extraordinaire in just about an hour and a half!!!

We heard yesterday that we lost another icon and friend in Jost Van D**e, an OG, Gertrude. This woman was one tough lady, airlifted out shortly (on YouTube) after Irma passed and destroyed the island in ‘17 with a busted up leg that required major orthopedic surgery and months of rehab/recovery and then returned to run and rebuild her business that’s been in White Bay since the late ‘70’s, being the sassy, take ‘none ‘yo s**t’ lady! Every time (except the first time when I went behind her place to get ginips off a tree) we were ALWAYS welcomed with a smile and a hug. She was never at loss for word or comment, nor for a smile or sharp opinion based on her observations and years of living. She has been part of our island family for more than a decade and is already so missed. Paradise rest to our friend, Gertrude, and to Olga, Uncle Wendell, Misty and all her family our thoughts and prayers. Going to be different when we get up there next time, but so thankful for the many hours we had with her and the words and views she passed on to us. A true blessing to all that took the time to spend some with her. So many memories and stories, and so much more to be thankful for. Universe puts people in your life for a reason, thank you Universe for this special lady.

Apologies … got word that one of the pics was inappropriate! Fixed it!

Wow! Thanks so much to all of y’all who were so kind to take time out of your day to reach out yesterday to wish me a happy birthday! I can’t help but think of how blessed we are to do what we do that allows us to meet so many truly wonderful people! Thank you!

We put all those wishes to good use and had a GREAT day! As planned, we started the day with some amazing pastries and coffee, then got surprised with a parade! From there, we took a dinghy ride over to the Dutch side and played at the beach in Simpson Bay and had lunch at one of our favorite spots, The Dinghy Dock. After filling our bellies with their good grub, it was back to the boat for sundowners and sunchill time before the fireworks show! (That was so good, it’ll get its own post soon!)

Again, thank all of y’all so much for your good wishes! It sure worked! 🥰❤️

14 July, Bastille Day for those that celebrate it, but most importantly it’s Tamii’s birthday! Yep, a day for us to celebrate another year of adventure, life and love! It was a rough ride to get here but so worth it!! This one’s a bit different as we’re checking one off her list by spending it in St Martin which is a French overseas collective island that celebrates Bastille Day, something she’s always wanted to do. Gonna be a great day with friends, food, fireworks….and croissants!!! Happy birthday to my love, best mate, sharer of my dreams, sufferer of me, and Buddy’s mom!!

Just an update on our planned off season adventures. We left from our ball in Red Hook, St Thomas, USVI at 6PM Wednesday with a brown b***y es**rt, which is a sailors’ good luck thing. Along the way in the wee morning hours today we dodged a squall and a pirate cruise ship, started a sargassum garden which contained 3 little crabs we apparently ‘smuggled’ in. Finally at 3:15PM, 21 1/4 hours later, we picked up a mooring in Marigot Bay, St Martin (French side) The yellow flag is a ‘Q’ flag (quarantine) which shows we haven’t cleared in to the country….tomorrow morning. It was a rougher ride with 3-5’ choppy waves, 18-27 knot winds but so worth it as we’re meeting friends and celebrating Tamii’s birthday on the 14th, which is Bastille Day, and she’s always wanted to celebrate on a French island, so here we are! That and boat work to do, also. But first, some fun! Stay tuned!

Stay tuned ….

Just a quick post to thank all of y’all that have reached out regarding the weather situation. We are far enough north of the storm and are adjusting our plans to keep us as comfortable and safe as possible. (We’re the white dot at the top of the picture, storm crossing Cariacou now)Thinking of our friends and fellow sailors that are in harms way and thankful for all those that prepped for the storm in various marinas down island. Stay safe and see you soon.

One of the best things about living on a boat in the Caribbean is that from time to time, we get to see family (without having to leave our home!) We are so blessed to have been able to spend time with Tamii’s Aunt Debbie and Uncle Al this season. Even better, they loved our home and these islands so much they want to come back again! And sooner rather than later! It was so much fun for us to enjoy our home turf with family! Thank y’all so much for making the trip all the way from the West Coast! We loved the time y’all shared with us! Debra Ann Rushin Alvin Rushin

Good Flag Day to you all, and happy Friday!! Also a happy 249th birthday to all my Army friends! I wanted to know a bit about this day and since no one asked, here’s some of what I learned (yeah, still capable of that). This day in 1777 was when the flag of the US was adopted by the Second Continental Congress and later officially established as an official ‘Day’ by Congress on August 3rd, 1949. In 1885, a school teacher in Wisconsin, Bernard Cigrand, held the first recognized observance of Flag Day. He went on to promote and speak all over the country on the flag, patriotism and so forth. Dude did a lot to make it happen and is considered the ‘Father of Flag Day’.

Since then, it’s seen a lot and been through so much…amazing what a piece of cloth can do to people, and what they’ll do to and for it. Having served under it I’ve seen both sides, so today I’m going to take a few to think on these things and what it means living under this flag. Hope y’all have a great Flag Day and end to your week! 🇺🇸

On Tuesday we had the opportunity to attend an awarenessraiser/fundraiser for the Yellow Cedar assisted living home at our favorite Red Hook restaurant & bar, Tarpon's Table . The aim was to give wonderful folks the space to gain skills in the service industry and practice their people skills. Our community showed up for this event in full force, the service was great and the food was its usual fantastic. Thank you to the owners & staff of Tarpon’s Table for volunteering at the home and for making this happen and thank you to the folks that provided us excellent service. We spotted friends, neighbors and lots of familiar faces all supporting this event! Love seeing the neighborhood and community we have come to cherish show up like this. Oh, and btw, we have never splurged on dessert here before, but it was presented in such a way that we couldn’t resist and we’ll definitely be back for more of that! Hope this becomes a regular and, according to Trevor, it will! Trevor Wilcox Duskin Hogue - Thank y’all much for organizing this event!

It might have been a minute since we posted because we’ve been too busy having fun, but today deserves a shout out! One of the things we absolutely love about being able to bring friends to the SVI is being able to share how wonderful the people here are. It never fails that we get treated with kindness and welcoming when we come over to visit. Today, our friend got to chatting with a fella named Manuel Chavez and mentioned that she’d broken one pair of sunglasses and mislaid another while visiting. This fella just so happens to run a business selling the coolest shades in Puerto Rico. He invited our friend to come by his boat and he and his wife hooked her up with some super cool shades for her peepers! Thanks so much to for your generosity and for showing such kindness to our good friend! We think she makes an awesome model for your very cool shades! We can’t say enough how much we appreciate having the people of Puerto Rico as our friends and neighbors! 🇵🇷🤗😎🥰

For all our friends in the Brazoria County area, there’s a new ‘storage’ in town! 🎶🎼🎵 Red Barn Boat & RV Storage is definitely something you should check out if you’re in need of boat or RV storage! The business owner is AMAZING! (We’re biased since it’s Tamii’s sister, but we’re also right! 😎)

Day 7 started early so these folks could pack up and head out to take advantage of some of the duty free shopping available here on St. Thomas since there were some milestone celebrations to commemorate! And they even brought Buddy back a gift! 😍
They popped back by the marina on their way to the airport so we could get hugs in before they headed home to their kiddos with lots more hugs!

This was such a great trip! We will definitely be doing this again! We’ll have one more wrap up post tomorrow for y’all! Stay tuned! This was an amazing charter!!!

Day 6 was Captain Bill’s pancake breakfast day! These folks followed that up with some more water time and one more trip to shore for some beach time! We packed up a cooler and beach mats and they got to enjoy a little of the beach life. Once back to the boat, pulled pork sandwiches for an on the move lunch as we headed into the marina. Even at the marina, there was sea life to watch from the back of the boat. There might have even been a little Stray Shower merch shopping going on … Stray Shower Mom’s pottery is hard to resist! A trip into Tickles for happy hour and a few snacks while we all talked about some of the favorite spots we’d stayed. Another game or two back on the boat before these folks called it a night with a plan for an early morning to make the most of the time we had left.

Back to our trip … we started out our second full day with a giant strawberry and a little quiche Lorraine with a beautiful view. (We have a lot of those around here)! ☀️🕶️😍

We got underway to move from Honeymoon, St. John to Maho and enjoyed some great breezes and a few bumpy seas that made for a fun ride!

We pulled into Maho and it wasn’t long at all before the turtles started popping up to say hello. These folks hopped right in the water to get a closer peep!

We might have discovered a failed alternator along the way. Boat life is a thing, y’all!

But it didn’t stop us and these folks were still able to enjoy all Maho has to offer and get all the way up to The Windmill Bar for a sunset and then on down to Shambles for a damn good ashore meal, too!
