I am so excited to share that our adopted second home of the Comune di Agnone, a place of the utmost beauty and the most important city in Alto Molise, is a finalist for the Capital of Italian Culture 2026. As a partner in Agnone's candidacy, we at Molise Italian Studies may be biased, but there is no more fitting place to don this title. Indeed, it is called the Citta d'Arte and is recognized by the Italian touring club, Bandiera arancione.

Agnone is home to a pontifical bell foundry, Pontificia Fonderia di Campane Marinelli (the world's oldest); many artisan metalworkers and the MUSEO Storico DEL RAME Francesco Gerbasi 1856; artisan cheesemakers and the region's best Caciocavallo (as well as the Museum of Transhumance) at Caseificio Di Nucci; a collection of ancient texts at the municipal library, Biblioteche Riunite Comunale e B. Labanca - Agnone; fourteen beautiful churches; concerts, plays, and movies at the newly revitalized Teatro Italo Argentino; and mouth-watering bakeries and restaurants. And all of this is immersed in and surrounded by a stunningly beautiful natural landscape.

But for us, what makes Agnone worthy of being named Capital of Italian Culture 2026 (and a place we are proud to call our second home) is its kind, welcoming, and hard-working people who embrace our family every time we visit (and even welcomed our children to attend school last fall) and who have helped make multiple American university faculty-led trips a success by also embracing our students.

The comune once asked us and our students to tell them what we see when we look at Agnone with the fresh eyes of outsiders. The answer is a home and a cultural center full of beauty, both within and without, that we are immensely proud to be a part of. We cannot strongly enough endorse Agnone for the Capital of Italian Culture 2026!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
