PARK UPDATE:
The Marsh Trail at West Point Foundry Preserve is under construction as we improve the landscape and remove invasive plant species. The rest of the preserve remains open for you to enjoy! You can still access the park through the main entrance at the end of Kemble Ave (0.8 mile walk from the train station). Thank you for your patience as we work to make these updates.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Explore Revolutionary War History with the Putnam History Museum:
Independence Day Celebration at Mekeel’s Corners Chapel
and Benedict Arnold’s Escape Path Hike

COLD SPRING, NY – The Putnam History Museum (PHM) is excited to announce two upcoming events that offer unique opportunities to commemorate Independence Day and explore one of the nation's most infamous betrayals by General Benedict Arnold.

Hiking Benedict Arnold’s Escape Path: On Friday, June 28th, PHM will lead hikers along Benedict Arnold’s escape path. Infamous for his plan to surrender West Point to the British, this hike traces Arnold’s flight on September 25, 1780, down Beverley Dock Road to reach British lines before his treason was discovered. Participants will learn about Arnold’s motivations, the role of local loyalist Beverley Robinson, and the broader context of Revolutionary War history, espionage, and loyalty. Special guest guides from the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Putnam County will also share how the natural environment has changed since that time. A second hike is offered on Saturday, July 6th.

Independence Day Celebration at Mekeel’s Corners Chapel: On July 4th at 10 am, Mekeel’s Corners Chapel, located at 321 NY-301, Cold Spring, NY 10516, will host its annual Independence Day Celebration. The program includes patriotic songs, hymns, and readings from the United States’ founding documents. This inspirational event, longstanding for decades, is a community favorite. This event is free and open to the community.

Cassie Ward, Executive Director of the Putnam History Museum, stated, "Both the Mekeel’s Corners Chapel Independence Day Celebration and our guided hike of Benedict Arnold’s escape path provide opportunities to remember pivotal moments in our shared American history through a local lens. We’re fortunate here in the Hudson Valley and Putnam County to have tangible connections to these major historical events, enabling our guests to truly walk in the footsteps of history.”
