Destination Expert Mikey's last day in Chile! đŸ‡šđŸ‡±

The remote location of the Mallín Colorado Ecolodge allows guests to access some of the most spectacular trails in Patagonia – whether you prefer hiking or horseback riding. Our guide, Matu, led us along the trails, sharing fascinating stories about the history of Chile’s National Parks along the way.

One highlight was spotting a vibrant woodpecker, its bright red color standing out against the trees. We also learned about the local flora and fauna and ongoing conservation projects. The hike was a fantastic way to connect with nature and appreciate the wilderness of this remote region. It was the perfect ending to a memorable visit to Aysén, leaving us already thinking about our next adventure here!

Destination Expert Mikey is back, and continuing his journey through Chile! 👋

We had the incredible opportunity to explore one of Chile's most breathtaking natural wonders – the Marble Caves! Located on the pristine General Carrera Lake, the best way to get up close to these stunning formations is by kayaking. After a quick but essential safety briefing, we set off on a 30-minute paddle across the glacial waters, surrounded by dramatic landscapes.

Our effort was soon rewarded as we reached the islets of the smaller "Marble Chapel" and larger "Marble Cathedral," where the powerful forces of nature have carved intricate caves, tunnels, and towering columns for over 6,200 years.

One of the highlights of the day was witnessing a rainbow arching gracefully behind the caves, adding a magical touch to the already mesmerizing scenery! After our adventure, we were treated to a cozy snack of homemade banana bread, hot drinks, and sandwiches, the perfect way to refuel after such an amazing experience.

Join us tomorrow for our last day in Chile!

Perched with sweeping views of the lake, Mallin Colorado offers a perfect blend of relaxation, delicious meals, and outdoor adventure. The lodge features a variety of accommodation options, including 4 charming cabins and 6 rooms in the main house called “Casa Lenga”. The cabins are ideal for larger families or groups, with multiple bedrooms and plenty of space to spread out, providing a more private and spacious retreat.

The rooms in Casa Lenga, where we stayed, are designed for double or triple occupancy, and offer a cozy and comfortable living area with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and lake.

One of the highlights of our stay was the incredible food—fresh, locally sourced ingredients (and generous portions) expertly prepared into dishes that capture the flavors of Patagonia. With a range of outdoor activities available, from hiking to kayaking, horseback riding, and birdwatching, Mallin Colorado is an excellent base to explore AysĂ©n while also offering a peaceful place to relax and unwind.

Follow along tomorrow for our adventure to the Marble Caves!

Hi there! It’s your Destination Expert Mikey here exploring Chile with fellow Destination Experts Gerry and Megan, and I’m excited to share every moment with you. Our adventure continued into the breathtaking Patagonian region of AysĂ©n – from awe-inspiring Marble Caves to stunning lake scenery.

To reach AysĂ©n, we flew from Puerto Montt to Balmaceda in just one hour. From there, we were greeted by our guide and set off on a scenic 4-hour drive along the famous Carretera Austral. This iconic highway stretches 770 miles through remote villages and pristine National Parks, offering stunning vistas at every turn. We made plenty of photo stops along the way, with the highlight being the striking Cerro Castillo—fittingly named "Castle Peak" for its dramatic, fortress-like shape.

After a quick lunch break with our boxed meals, we reached the majestic General Carrera Lake, Chile's largest lake (shared with Argentina). We continued our lakeside drive for another hour before finally arriving at MallĂn Colorado, our cozy yet stylish home for the next two nights.

Stay tuned tomorrow for more of our Chile adventure!

Last days in Chile's Lake District with Destination Expert Megan!

To end our trip, we explored some of the more important and historical towns on ChiloĂ© Island, including the capital, Castro. The first stop of the day was a lookout point to get great shots of the colorful Palafitos, or traditional stilt houses that Castro is famous for. From there, we visited several wooden churches, painted in an array of colors, which have been designated as a UNESCO World heritage site since 2000. Introduced by the Jesuits in the 17th century, these churches were built with native timber to resist the region’s humid and rainy climate (unlike the typical colonial Spanish architecture of that time).

Afterwards, we explored the vibrant Municipal Market of Castro, where in addition to carrying the staples that you would expect to find at any market across Latin America, you could also find products that were uniquely Chilotan, including Cocha Yuyo (a type of edible red algae used in soups). In addition to the funky looking seaweed, it was quite interesting to see several stalls offering figures of mythical creatures such as witches and gnomes. Due to the years of geographic isolation from the mainland, Chiloé developed its own rich history of unique beliefs and folklore. This became even more evident as we finished our last night in the enchanting lake district with an evening stroll, making count of all the wooden statues of mythical creatures scattered about town.

Thank you for following along on this unforgettable journey. If you’re ready to make your own Chile dream a reality, contact us!

Continue along with Destination Expert Megan on her journey through the Lake District of Patagonia!

We departed Puerto Varas and headed to the picturesque island of ChiloĂ©, the largest island in the ChiloĂ© archipelago. Our first stop was Puñihuil Bay, a designated Natural Monument since it’s the only location in the world where Humbolt and Magellanic penguins nest side by side. While we were just shy of peak Penguin season (October to March), our hopes were high to see these adorable creatures firsthand.

Upon arriving at the secluded Puñihuil Cove, we checked in for our tour at one of the colorful wooden shacks lining the shore. Soon after, we were escorted to a small boat and set off, cruising around the three main islets while observing an array of marine birds. With a little luck on our side, we spotted a small black-and-white figure waddling among the rocky cliffs. And just like that, seeing a penguin in the wild was checked off the bucket list!

After a quick lunch break at a beachside restaurant, we continued two hours south to Chonchi where we indulged in one of the best gastronomic experiences I’ve ever had.

Driving up winding roads through pastoral hills dotted with grazing cattle, we arrived at the private residence of Chef Mauricio Ayala. After parking, we followed a stone pathway to a small, cottage-like traditional Chilote structure behind the main house, marked with a sign reading Cocina ("Kitchen" in Spanish). Upon entering, we were immediately captivated by the cozy atmosphere—warm candlelight, quirky dĂ©cor, and the rhythmic chopping and clanking of the chef putting the final touches on our 12-course meal. A private dinner party, just for us. The food, conversation, and amazing Chilean wine flowed for hours—the ultimate ingredients for an unforgettable travel experience.

Destination Expert Megan here, and we're continuing our journey through Chilean Patagonia! 👋

We awoke to clear skies and enjoyed our breakfast with a beautiful view of the lake (complete with the towering Osorno in the backdrop). Once full and caffeinated, we enjoyed a 45-minute scenic drive along the southern shore of Lake Llanquihue to the town of Ensenada. From here, we began our ascend to the snow-capped peak (how many people can say they hiked to the top of an active volcano!). After driving most of the way up, we finally pulled over when the roads become too icy and hiked the rest of the way up. I must admit, it was a surreal experience to hear snow crunching beneath your feet when less than an hour before you were enjoying a cool spring day. At the top, we took a much-needed break at the small outpost and warmed up with a hot cup of cocoa before making our way back down. đŸ—»

Once at the base of the volcano, we made the short 30-minute drive over to the Petrohue Waterfalls located inside the Vicente Perez Rosales National Park. These falls are famous for their rushing turquoise waters set against the wild landscape with the Osorno Volcano looming above. Although small, Vicente Perez is well organized with ample walkways and manicured trails. To finish off our day we enjoyed a packed lunch at a nearby picnic table of delicious sandwiches, fresh fruit, local chocolates and craft beer.

Hello from Chile! My name is Megan, Destination Expert at SA Expeditions. Recently I had the opportunity to explore the enchanting (and less traveled) region of Chilean Patagonia, the gorgeous Lake District! Join me along with fellow Destination Experts, Mikey and Gerry, as we find the best of what this region has to offer.

First stop was the Lahuen Nadi Monument, a stunning ecological park. While this was a rather soggy morning, undeterred, we strapped on our hiking boots, threw on our raincoats and headed into the forest. Besides being home to a vast variety of plant and animal species (a true paradise for birders), this area also serves as a cultural heritage site, steeped in rich traditions and histories that hold cultural significance for the local communities. 🌿

After exploring the forest, we continued to the lakeside town of Puerto Varas. While the town is most notable for its iconic view of the Majestic Osorno Volcano, we had no such luck, as thick rain clouds blocked our view. Volcano or not, we were able to keep our spirits high by relaxing at the hotel’s heated pool and indulging in a delicious pisco cocktail. đŸ—»

Our Story

How We Began The year was 2010 in Lima, Peru. Two American expats, with fresh minted MBA’s and a love for travel founded SA Expeditions. Nick Stanziano and David Rottblatt were taking a chance on life. Maybe with a few computers and lots of hard work, they could turn their passion for travel into a company. Since then, that idealism and ambitions of youth have come to reality, giving way to an adventure of a lifetime shared among our thousands of clients, colleagues and partners along the way. We are specialist in South America and we see ourselves as being born on the continent. Today though, our team is global. A robust and choreographed web of destination experts, guides and local operators that are at the very top of their craft, designing and executing travel experiences that changes lives.
