Did you know that between 1850 and its closure in 1956, the Empire Mine produced 5.8 million ounces of gold, extracted from 367 miles of underground passages?
Now a state park in Grass Valley, visitors can get a glimpse of Gold Rush-era high society by touring the Bourn Cottage, or experience daily mining life by exploring the mine yard and its relics—and even peer into some of the underground tunnels.
