It is with a heavy heart, we announce the passing of John Thomas "Tom" Miller. Like his father, Tom was a school bus contractor (bus 517), for Jefferson County schools for over 25 years. Tom, along with his brother Emmett (bus 414), started Miller Transportation, Inc. and has served as its president for over 50 years. The company has expanded from the Outer Loop in Louisville to Indianapolis, Indiana, and Columbus, Ohio.

Visitation will be held from 2 – 7 p.m. Thursday, at Joseph E. Ratterman & Son Funeral Home, 7336 Southside Dr, Louisville, KY 40214.

Tom’s funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 6105 S 3rd St, with burial to follow in St. Andrews Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Miller History

Miller Transportation started, not as a corporation or big enterprise, but in a way that was typical of the time- a farmer needing to supplement his income.

Driving a school bus was the perfect answer, morning and afternoon school runs with time to farm, and an occasional field trip. In 1937 Emmett Miller Sr. “Dad” purchased a School Bus, tending to all the maintenance and cleaning on his own.

In 1960, his two sons Tom and Emmett Jr. decided to follow in his footsteps, with Dad at their side. As their commitment and exemplary service continued, the business grew and grew. From school buses, to transit buses, to motor coaches.
