With a one night stay in Taupo, I took a ride on Lake Taupo to see the Maori rock carvings. These are fairly new carvings but done in a traditional style. And I love an excuse to get out on the water!

I want to share one last fun day in Dunedin - the Taeri Gorge Railway ride. It heads away from the coast beginning at the gorgeous Dunedin train station and crosses the Taeri Gorge before returning. It’s about a 5 1/2 hour round trip.
The scenery was wonderful but I also have to give a shout out to a young mom selling her homemade cinnamon rolls in the field where we got off to allow the engine to be moved to the other end of the train so we could ride back. It was probably the best cinnamon roll I have ever eaten. The important things in life. 🤣

Dunedin has one more species of penguins that nest on the beach near the Albatross Center: the little blue penguins (the smallest penguin). I confess to taking another tour - this one with Blue Penguins Pukekura. Totally worth it! You CAN do this on your own if you have a car and don’t mind driving late in the dark.

No car in Dunedin for me this week, so I took a tour with Monarch Wildlife Tours. It was a fabulous day and I saw the Northern Albatross AND yellow-eyed penguins (both endangered), as well as the work being done to protect them. Tour responsibly.

The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania is a museum that follows history in Lithuania, based on the use of this Palace. The lowest floor begins with history from the first wooden building in the 4th century. Each floor focuses on different periods. I wish I had time for more than the bottom floor - it was well done and so informational!

Dog sledding across the snow was almost like racing through air. Everyone should do it. ❤️
Yes, my feet froze (very warm clothes provided - I should have borrowed their boots). 🤣
I ended my cruise in Kirkenes and booked this independently through the Snow Hotel.
Side note: we stopped frequently along the way to let the dogs rest till they were excited to go again.

One of the best things I did in my 2 weeks was to take the Sami Experience excursion. I was afraid it would be lame and touristy. Far from it! The family hosting this was so open and honest and warm. This was a last minute decision and only a few people went - others have no idea what they missed.
