In Fields cut hundreds of feet from the Savannah River the wake from a container ship rolls in. The danger of this wake is not to be underestimated.

Virgin forests of Wassaw Island - Join us for a day; begin at the edge of Romerly marsh. The single Juniper perched on an Oyster rake is a marker for ‘New Cut’ that takes you through the interior of Wassaw a10,000 acre National Wildlife Refuge. The beginning of the most lovely day. Wassaw is derived from the Creek word wiso meaning Sassafras a plant found on the island. It is the gem of Georgia barrier islands never having been cut or cleared for crops. Virgin forests are rare on the coast.

How many Balloons have you found out on the water recently? We stop for balloons on our trips. You can puncture them and tie them in a ball to take to your nearest land fill. When released near the coast they are a danger to wildlife. Sea turtles in particular will mistake them for a cannonball jellyfish and eat them.
Leatherbacks the largest sea turtle in the world eat primarily jelly fish. All five species of sea turtle are endangered.

Fossilized Shark tooth Mandala collected from the Savannah River “A mandala is a symbol of the universe in its ideal form, and its creation signifies the transformation of a universe of suffering into one of joy. It can also be used as an aid to meditation, helping the meditator to envision how to achieve the perfect self. “ - The Asia Society

Channeled Whelk on new sand bar off Little Tybee Island. We returned this Whelk to deep water. It may have a fighting chance. Its h***y plate called an operculum was still shut protecting the soft body of the animal.

Megalodon are the state fossil of Georgia. They are a minimum of 3.2 million years old. We do not find a whole Meg every hunt. We always find a lot of teeth and fragments of Megs we call Fragladon.

What a beautiful coast we have. At the top of the flooding tide you can see the dead marsh grass we call ‘Wrack’ washed up. Little Tybee’s beach and the larger coast is largely unknown for its pristine character. Join us on a ‘Little Tybee Unplugged’ for unfettered and unparalleled access to the Georgia coast. Land on the island preserve only accessible by boat with a naturalist to find sanddollars, whelks, crabs and more…

Roseate Spoonbills at the South end of the Gator pond on Little Tybee Island. Just one stop on our 7 hour “Ride the tide” trip. Ecologist and sculptor Captain Ellie Duffy and Master Naturalist Captain Rene Heidt took a family from Michigan and picked them up at day break. We hit the fossil grounds early before anyone else. A s***m whale tooth,a horse tooth, a stoic vertebra, inner ear bone to a whale and lots of teeth. When the tide started to roll in we headed back across the salt marsh through Oyster Creek. Large variety of bird species herons and egrets feeding in the shallows. The sound was calm so we shot over to Wassaw for some of the best shelling and the drift yard bone wood forest. Swimming on Little Tybee near dolphin capped the day off.

Female Diamondback Terrapin are gravies or full of eggs this time of year. They look for high ground to lay their eggs and inadvertently end up on Rt.80. They are the only turtle that lives exclusively in the salt marsh. A delicacy in the 1920’s for Terrapin Stew they were early exterminated. A beautiful animal with white knock and legs with black spots. They often perish in crab traps. They go in after crab bait and are very social with multiple turtles following them in. They can only hold their breath for six hours.

The Megalodon was the greatest apex predator to ever roam the ocean. It was 40 feet long, like a school bus with teeth. Every time a shark loses a tooth a new one pops forward to replace it. Each individual shark goes through thousands of teeth in it's life time. These teeth are at least 3.5 million years old if not 25 million.
Captain Kyle Sheffield had a good day.
