On their recent visit to the farm, Ella and her mother braved the cold to spend a day refurbishing the enchanted Fairy Forest. Find countless imaginative dwellings among the rocks and roots of our woods! The fairies rely totally upon our guests to build and maintain their houses, and some guests plan ahead and bring miniature props to add more charm to the neighborhood. Whether you spend an hour or a day helping the fairies, you’ll not soon forget this enchanting hands-on experience!

The chickens have started laying again, a sure sign that spring is not far away. They shut down after the hurricane, stayed quiet for the dark, cold months, but have given Ella a basket full today, for her birthday. Ella has celebrated her birthday on the farm since she was a toddler, longer than she can remember. Happy Birthday Ella!

Josephine has added zing to her bling! Found her sporting this trendy feather stuck in her nose ring—so cool! So primitive! She keeps asking for a red dress, and I keep telling her just as soon as she learns to ride the tricycle I bought her years ago!! Why the nose ring for a pot-bellied pig? In addition to helping her fit right in with many of our teen guests, the ring hinders her from digging up our yard and pasture with her snout. -belliedpig

Hurricane Helene clean up continues. Spent another day clearing our hiking trails. We do not have a redwood you can drive through, but we do now have a giant shagbark hickory you can drive under!! And one more loop across the mountain you can hike without climbing through trees!!

The cat came back!! The polecat, that is. You may remember from my Dec 30 post that he got a free ride back to the farm IN MY TRUCK engine. Noticed I was losing eggs at the barn again, so set a trap last night, and a familiar smell greeted me this morning. This time when I released him, I do so far from my vehicle. Rather than running in circles, he made a bee line up the hill…and probably right back to my barn…lol!

Squab anyone? The most overlooked denizens of the farm, our pigeons are now raising their young, right in the jaws of winter. Each nest will have exactly 2 eggs, and I’m told one will always hatch female and one male, producing a breeding pair. The young pigeons, aka squab, have been raised as a delicacy for thousands of years. How I would love to have a monstrous dovecote such as the Penmon Dovecote in Wales, circa 1600, which housed 1000 birds and fed a village! Here on the farm we do not raise pigeons to eat; we enjoy their peaceful cooing and the rare pleasure of watching them fly for no other reason than the sheer delight of it. Oh, to have wings!!

The horses think that just because it’s snowing I’m going to feed them a great deal more. And no, Midnight, pitching a fit is not going to make me cave!

In my 20 years of farming, it’s never happened. But recently I caught my first polecat (aka civet cat or spotted skunk) in a trap! Boy did the barn and dogs smell good that morning!! I drove her away, and when I carefully released her, you won’t believe what happened. First she ran all around up and down as if completely disoriented in the daylight. Then she ran under my truck and disappeared! OMG!! After a thorough investigation and not seeing anything, I ran the truck a while, then drove home. Didn’t take long for the dogs to start barking up a storm, trying to tear into the truck engine! So with a skunk in my truck, I drove far away and walked home, and over night she disappeared into the darkness!! Hopefully she won’t be back any time soon…
