Started as Control System Services, then as I branched out into technologies beyond process control, the name evolved into CSS-Technologies. My adventure into what has become a passion began in 1980 after four years of service in the U.S. Navy. After a brief stint building up electron microscopes in Sunnyvale, I was hired by the City of Palo Alto California. In five years there, I gained the expe

rience to perform as a journey-level Instrumentation Technician. Then working for a North Bay Instrumentation Contractor for a year, I gained more knowledge in design and start-up projects, working with major project contractors and engineering firms. After moving to Sonoma County, I found it was time to strike out on my own. I have been told by many that I would never make it in business billing honest hours for honest work. That was twenty seven years ago. I’m still here. Many of the others are gone.

Windows users:

Right now, Right-click your taskbar, click on Task Manager. When it comes up, on the Processes Tab, find a process called GWX, Right-click it, then choose End Task. This will kill the Windows 10 upgrade program that is running in the background.

"By default Windows 10 Home is allowed to control your bandwidth usage, install any software it wants whenever it wants (without providing detailed information on what these updates do), display ads in the Start Menu (currently it has been limited to app advertisements), send your hardware details and any changes you make to Microsoft and even log your browser history and keystrokes which the Windows End User Licence Agreement (EULA) states you allow Microsoft to use for analysis."

Saved another client's data over the weekend. They had just parked critical data on a USB backup that failed the next day. Luckily, the failure was the USB/SATA circuit. Using our recovery rig, we saved everything on the drive, resulting in a very happy client.

Remember- the only thing you know about a hard drive is that it WILL fail. Be prepared, belt & suspenders.

Why Microsoft .Net failed

The problem I run into a lot is Dentrix, one of the most highly distributed dental practice management software suites is entirely based on .Net . It is full of holes, conflicting dll stacks, and conflicts with popular found-everywhere apps like Adobe Reader. The decision to use .Net produced a product that has to be managed as well as used.

Microsoft tried, but it couldn't win the hearts and minds of developers who weren't already indoctrinated -- and it alienated others along the way
