Connecticut Trails Day is coming up on Saturday, June 1. I'll be leading a walk with Jessica Penfield of Wild Birds Unlimited (Old Saybrook, CT). Please join us at The Preserve State Forest: 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., for a moderate-to-brisk walk over rolling, rocky trails. (Walking sticks are helpful.) We'll mostly walk, but will make a few stops to explore some special features of The Preserve.

Special treat: At the end of the walk, a $25 gift card to Wild Birds Unlimited of Old Saybrook will be drawn for a prize. Other prizes include a hand-carved walking stick and a book provided by the Connecticut Forest and Park Association.

Arrive by 8 a.m. We will leave the parking lot promptly at 8:10. The lot is at 1278 Essex Road in Westbrook. Bring water and insect protection, and wear boots. Ages 12 and older. No dogs, please. Heavy rain may cancel. Check the Old Saybrook Parks & Rec website that morning for cancellation/rescheduling.

Register online for activities, memberships, facility reservations, and more.

Martha Stewart devoted today's Up Close & Personal blog to "A Presentation by Native Plant Expert Uli Lorimer." In her post, Martha heaps praise on Uli and his book, The Northeast Native Plant Primer, which still rules as #1 on Amazon's New England garden books list. Check out Martha's post here: https://www.themarthablog.com/2024/01/a-presentation-by-native-plant-expert-uli-lorimer.html

Native Plant Trust is the nation’s first plant conservation organization and the only one solely focused on New England’s native plants. We save native plants in the wild, grow them for gardens and restorations, and educate others on their value and use

A big 'thank you' to Catherine Greenleaf of Bird Hugger Podcast for inviting me to talk about site preparation, especially as it pertains to making a site ready for native plantings. Site preparation is "secret sauce" in planting success, in my opinion.

Love gardening and birds and want to help Mother Nature? Join host Catherine Greenleaf, former gardening columnist for the Boston Herald Sunday Magazine and a certified wildlife rehabilitator with 20 years of experience rescuing and rehabilitating injured wildlife, for discussions about organic gard...

Thanks to Tom Christopher for inviting me to share what I've gained by several years of experimentation with "leave the leaves" and "save the stems." Both of these autumn practices are so valuable for wildlife, but a bit tricky to do. Listen to Tom's podcast:

Ecological landscape designer and educator Kathleen Connolly takes a deep dive into her new approach to putting the garden to bed in fall. Leave the leaves but keep the beauty.

Our Story

Beautiful, healthy landscapes are a joy to see, but they don't happen by accident. Four disciplines work together to create a successful landscape plan: Art, horticultural science, spatial principles, and landscape craft. I aim to work with clients as we weave these together, from beneath the soil surface to the treetops and the larger world. In my design pratice, I offer design consultations, horticultural consultations, and comprehensive landscape plans. As part of my love of sharing my experiences, I speak for community groups and environmental organizations throughout New England. (In 2018, I gave 26 talks.) I also write a regional column on landscape-related topics for The Day community papers and media, which circulate throughout southeastern Connecticut and western Rhode Island. In February 2019, the column will be six years old.
