Today we are celebrating World Gorilla Day 2021.
There are four different subspecies of gorilla; the cross-river, western lowland, eastern lowland and mountain gorilla, all found in Africa.
All of these subspecies are facing habitat loss and therefore their numbers are dwindling. You can see the mountain gorilla while staying at Bisate Lodge, during a trekking experience in Volcanoes National Park. Supporting these conservation areas helps to protect and restore their populations.
Today also marks 'Kwita Izina', Rwanda’s annual gorilla naming ceremony, celebrating the 24 newest mountain gorillas born in Volcanoes National Park this year.
