Time for some port wine tasting! 🍷
Calem is one of the oldest port wine producers in Porto, and we learned all about the making of port wine, and the differences between, tawny, ruby, rosé and white port. And of course we had to taste some too!
Pro tip: if you can get your hands on some white port, try making a cocktail with equal amounts white port and tonic water. Surprisingly good!

The Douro Valley at its best … with our ship AmaVida center-stage!
November is a wonderful time of year to visit this destination. Pack a sweater and enjoy the quiet time of year, the leaves turning and much fewer people around.
Unsurprisingly, prices are lower then too. What’s not to love?

Mateus Palace is really a bit a misnomer - Manor would be more accurate for the 18th century baroque estate.
Beautiful French gardens, vineyards and fruit tree plantings (including a quince tree!) add to the experience.

Look familiar? You may have been too drunk to remember. The Palacio de Mateus is featured on the Mateus Rosė label, although that’s not where the wine is made, they just purchased the rights to use the name and the building’s silhouette.

Such a fun little tour of a very traditional Portuguese craft.
Turns out my tin-wrapping skills are pretty good, although I’ll have to practice some more to match the 6 seconds some of the factory workers achieve!

Today is Reunification Day in Germany, one of its few non-religious national holidays (in a country that’s mostly secular these days - go figure). This day in 1990 was the culmination of 45 years of hoping, praying and hard work to bring the two sides of Germany back together.
While I was pretty young at the time, I remember my father’s excitement as events unfolded in 1989 and 1990. His family was directly affected by the way Germany was carved up after WWII.
Living in the small town of Görlitz, southeast of Berlin, they found themselves in the Russian-held zone after Germany lost the war. As the communists took over and imposed Soviet-style politics on the area, my grandparents made the risky decision to flee to West Germany. Packing up the kids for what they told friends was a camping trip (my grandfather hated camping), they drove to Berlin, parked the car, and walked across the border with nothing but the clothes on their backs. At the time, many inhabitants of East Berlin worked in West Berlin, so crossing the border wasn’t that hard, but doing so clutching a suitcase would have raised suspicions. A year later, the Berlin Wall went up, and they’d have been stuck.
Luckily, my family had relatives in Hamburg they knew would take them in, so they had somewhere to live while they rebuilt their lives. My father didn’t see many of his relatives who chose to stay behind until the wall came down in 1989.
Eastern Germany is a fascinating place to visit, and other than Berlin, very undertouristed. If you’re ever interested in exploring both ancient and more recent history in the beautiful states of Saxony, Brandenburg and many others, I would love to help!
