Istanbul's Basilica Cistern is an unexpected underground marvel. Built with pillars pilfered from assorted ancient temples, each capital is different, and yet the whole comes together as a uniform piece.
Built in the 6th century as a water reservoir for Istanbul, it has now been enhanced with different-colored light schemes and acts as an art gallery (I particularly enjoyed Medusa and her shadow).

💙✨ The Harem of Topkapı Palace is an intimate masterpiece, adorned with thousands of hand-painted Iznik tiles — deep cobalt blues, emerald greens, and intricate floral patterns that reflect the pinnacle of Ottoman artistry. If you look closely, some tiles hail from Italy and the Netherlands too.

Once the private quarters of sultans and their families, the Harem now offers a fascinating glimpse into 15th century Ottoman living.

Let's talk about the other Four Seasons hotel in Istanbul ... the Four Seasons Istanbul at Sultanahmet. The charming historic building (that actually used to be a prison) was lovingly restored to create a boutique, luxury experience just a stone's throw from the Hagia Sophia, which you can even see from several balconies. While Sultanahmet is a very busy area, the hotel's location, tucked down a quiet side street, offers the perfect combination of proximity and relaxation.
And why not combine both Four Seasons hotels? They'll be happy to arrange a boat transfer between the two, allowing you to enjoy a little jaunt on the Bosphorus.

The stray cats and dogs of Istanbul are much beloved. They receive veterinary care and are all vaccinated and neutered. At every corner you'll find a bowl of water and a handful of kibble. All this care makes them very friendly!

Istanbul can give Rome a run for its money any day ... its ancient monuments, vibrant culture and the Bosphorus pulling it all together.
I was initially concerned about the Hagia Sofia, knowing that she was turned back into a mosque in 2020 and hoping some of the exquisite ancient artwork hadn't been covered up. I was pleasantly surprised - the ground floor is now only open for prayer, but the gallery that runs all the way around the inside is open for visitors. Only the murals of the archangels have had their faces covered, and tastefully so. All the other artwork is fully visible, or in one case, artfully draped so that it is hidden from those praying but visible from the side for visitors.
Built as a church in the 4th century, the Hagia Sofia stands proud to this day, with the addition of four minarets in the 15th century.
