Members of the Utah Tour Guide Association visited The Other Side Donuts and The Other Side Village in Salt Lake City this week. This amazing organization empowers homeless individuals in Utah to change their lives through a structured program, skills training, support and encouragement, and more.

We first visited the donut shop, a social enterprise to help fulfill the nonprofit's mission. Two managers of the shop told us all about it, shared their stories of recovery, and let us sample some of their delicious donuts.

Then we toured the nearby village of tiny houses with one of our members, Moe from Local Food Walking Tours. Moe is the Director of Neighbor Recruitment for The Other Side Village. We encourage you to support this organization. One way to do it, get some donuts at The Other Side Donuts!

Over the past two days, UTGA hosted Basic Tour Guide Training at This Is The Place Heritage Park. Twelve participants completed the course that consisted of six classroom modules, a demonstration tour, and leading portions of both a walking tour and as a step-on guide for a driving tour. Throughout the training, guides learned about what it means to be a tour guide, differences between types of tours, research tips for evaluating sources and what some good sources are, reviewed basic communications skills, were introduced to to the skill of interpretation, discussed flexibility and adapting to various scenarios, ethics and standards of the guiding industry, and considerations for planning a tour.

This training is required towards becoming a Certified Utah Tour Guide. As these guides continue honing their skills and gaining knowledge that helps them as guides, they can earn credits toward certification.

We do not have dates set for our next round of basic guide training yet. If you are interested, please send us a message, so that we can keep you posted on upcoming training or to learn about the Certified Utah Tour Guide program.
