Don’t you love stumbling upon gems like this?! We’re making our way down to the desert and decided to have one good ole fashioned high mountain camp before we got there. Temps forecasted to be 32F tonight though. Pulling a Joey from and wearing every layer of clothing we brought!

After that epic storm and wild sunset, waking up this morning to sunshine was most welcome. The rain made for really great conditions on the dunes so we had to take a few laps before leaving. It’s pretty incredible how much the road still feels like home ... ahhh this feels good!
This is our new rig and she needs a name. Suggestions?

Perks of post-season, earn-your-turn fun for the whole family! 🎿 The cream cheese snow was laughable, memorable, and oddly perfect all at the same time. Love these little adventurers of mine.

🎞BEHIND THE SCENES -- Episode 2
“Give a man a fish, and you’ll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you’ve fed him for a lifetime.”
While parked up at the top of Hellroaring Plateau, we went on a hike deep into the Beartooths with a mission to catch some fish. This started a challenge that lasted the entirety of the trip: catch our dinner whenever possible. This ended up happening more than we thought and was a perfect job to outsource to the kids!
It was also during Episode 2 that I tucked away my Canon 5D and began to exclusively use the Sony A7R for photography. We were already using the Sony(s) for filming and it made a lot more sense to use the same camera for photography. Turns out, mirrorless cameras are pretty legit. Who else shoots with one and what do you think of it?

Time for a little movie magic! Although this scene appears in episode #10 (“Tunnels, Dead Ends, Re-Routing and the Montana Caribbean”) in the Solo Series, it was actually filmed chronologically last! It was mid-September and below freezing temps showed up in the morning. We wore shorts to make it look more like summer. Did we fool you? Could anyone tell this was filmed out of order?!

BEHIND THE SCENES -- Episode 1
We moved a total of 14 times during the stay-at-home order. Fourteen! It’s kind of surprising that our families still love us after we crashed on their sofas for so many nights. With that being said, when the hangar door opened and we were finally able to start the trip it it made it feel even sweeter. How much did we have planned out at this point? Night one. That’s it. But that’s all we needed.

🎦 The Walthall Solo series FINALE airs tonight! 7pm MST on the YouTube channel. We found ourselves back at the coast where it all started. Meeting up with like-minded people and coming together over the collective passion of overlanding - and surfing, truly made the experience come alive. Matt, Michelle, Ryan, Christina, Dave, and the rest of the coast crew- you all went well out of your way to accommodate and adventure with us. This episode wouldn’t have happened without you!
THANK YOU to Clay and Shelly at for believing in us and never suggesting to throw in the towel, but always finding a way to keep moving forward. Y’all are gold. And proof that even a pandemic can’t stop you. 💯

Don’t you love witnessing nature’s magical powers? ❄️ Today, we watched as the cold (really cold) humid air froze right in front of our eyes and formed a sparkly ball in the sunshine. How exactly that works I’m not sure, but I will say it made for an extra special time on the mountain! Swipe through to take a closer look.

Interrupting our ski trip with a reminder that a new SOLO series episode airs tonight, 7PM MST!
On this week’s episode we explore an area called “Idaho’s Swiss Alps” as recommended by a fan we bumped into on the trip. From what we could see it was a majestic place, but the area was so smoky we were quickly forced to retreat to cleaner skies. During this detour we stumbled upon a ghost town, gold dredge, and a hot spring. How’s that for a silver lining? ;-)

Challenges only limit you if you let them.
I remember when it was just the two of us. Bryan and I spent many days skiing and me and my giddy smile would happily follow just him down the mountain. Kids showed us a new level of challenge but an even deeper contentment. It’s funny how the kids fit right in, half him and half me, but yet completely and distinctly unique. We kept on skiing. This time around, Bryan had four very giddy smiles following him through the snow ghosts.

We made it to Whitefish, Montana! One of our very favorite spots for a little family getaway. We’re staying at which is a stones throw away from the ski hill - and also has glorious opportunities to soak (both warm and cold, but more on that later).
We scored bluebird conditions on the hill and managed to stay the entire day with only one (really tasty) hot chocolate stop. The candy we stuffed in our pockets went a long way, too. ;-) This place is epic.

🚗💨 Road trip, baby!! How do you guys make the most of winter? For us, we spend as much time as we possibly can out enjoying it. “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing”. I’m constantly reminded that we can handle anything - esp if we are prepared for it! So, Bryan and I planned a lil getaway with the kids in search of more of this glorious winter!
Compass is pointed ... north! 🧭 Let’s goooo!

When there’s just barely enough snow to cover the ground ... you still go sledding! We found these super fast sleds at (trust me, you’ll fly). Coat and pants are and warmest winter boots ever are !! Eagerly awaiting the next big storm cycle ... ❄️ ❄️ ❄️
Stella and I (Meg) are now only one size difference in shoes. I’m working on stunting her growth. I mean, she’s only 9. Tips appreciated 👍🏼🤪

8 months ago, the kids were saying “see you later” to their friends at school and we were taping up the last of the boxes at our house on Maui. We could have never imagined what a wild ride this year would turn out to be! We’ve spent more time with our kids than we ever have before, and what a gift that is. Bring on the next 8 months. I have a feeling we’re in for a treat 👊🏼!

Three episodes from our Solo series are now live on the YouTube channel. Have you tuned in?!
Our original itinerary was going to take us 11,000 miles around Australia. As most of you know, that didn’t happen, but we did end up covering the same amount of ground while exploring the Northwestern US.
We started in Beartooth Mountains. This area treated us to hairpin turns, catching our dinner, and total seclusion. We loved having our little “waffles” among for the ride!

A glimpse of the past couple days. Bath time in a rock pool, cliff side drives, and sweet sleeps in the tent. It felt wonderful to take it easy. We have an big, exciting mission coming up this week that we’re stoked to share. More to come!

As we were hiking yesterday, Stella did something that shocked me.
You see, I brought three lollipops on the hike - one for each child. Two were cherry, and one was watermelon. The kids picked theirs at random and Stella was the one who got the highly-coveted watermelon lollipop. Kai was incredibly upset about the situation and was determined to let everybody within a mile radius know about it. We continued on hiking, when all of a sudden Kai’s audible frustration grew quiet.
I turn around to see Stella giving Kai her watermelon lollipop. She looks at me and says “I knew Kai really wanted it. He wasn’t having a good attitude, but I love him.”
True kindness has a tendency to hit you when you least expect it. Spread the love ❤️

Island life at 8,000ft was a success! ⛺️
A wildly less popular camping option on Maui is to sleep up in the clouds near Haleakalā. It’s legit up there but you get views of the whole island (and the Big Island if you’re lucky!) when the clouds blow away. We knew we’d found the happy medium between life in the tropics and our love of the mountains when, as we were playing cards in our tent after dinner, Aria asked if we could stay forever. ❤️ Needless to say, the stoke was high when we all got to mummify in our sleeping bags while the stars came out to play.⚡️How cool is it that you can do that on Maui?!
People will think you’re crazy for packing a down sweater to Hawaii but if you want to camp in the clouds, trust me you’ll want it! Just don’t wear it off the airplane.

💦 Diving deep into the wild blue with our buddies on beautiful Lanai!�Most of you know that Aria was stung by a man o war a week before we boarded the boat to sail to Lanai. She still has blisters on her arm from the crazy painful sting and hasn’t been excited about going in the ocean since. After an incredible morning sail from Maui to Lanai and schools of fish teasing her from below she was inspired to jump back in. With trembling arms she snapped on her floatie, gripped my arm, and jumped into the water. Aria was glowing as she showed her siblings and fish friends how brave she was. Scroll through the photos - I mean, what a place for a triumphant re-entry to the water. Trilogy’s “Discover Lana’i” tour is a MUST- DO on Maui!�.�This trip would not have been a success without the encouragement from the amazing crew members. 🥥 Dinner is served! Two coconuts and two papayas, you gotta start somewhere right!?
It’s true what they say; food tastes better if you harvest it yourself. Our ultimate goal, of course, is to grow it ourself too. Thank you neighbors for sharing your bounty!
If you watched our stories you know this wasn’t an entirely restful night camping, but at least we had full bellies to carry us through. Camping in the tropics has an interesting learning curve but we will keep at it! Is it even possible to sleep and not sweat all night long?!

We didn’t know how long this trail was or where it led, all that mattered is that we out exploring together. It was an added bonus that the “trail” was mostly a stream and helped keep us cool as we waded our way upriver, eventually finding ourselves under a little waterfall. The unknown can be scary, sure. But it can also be really freaking awesome. More of this, please. 🤙🏼
