Notably, the restoration includes the revival of the original skeleton key lock and hardware, emphasizing our commitment to preserving the authentic experience of our guests. 🔑

When you embark on a Casa della Zia tour, you're in for an unforgettable experience that always includes a visit to Norcia. Nestled in the Valnerina Valley, where Umbria meets Le Marche, its history dates back to the Sabine people, with roots reaching the Roman Empire. During the 3rd century, Christianity left its mark with the birth of twin saints, St. Scolastica and St. Benedict, the Patron Saint of Europe, who founded Italy's first monastic Christian community.

Norcia was once a hub of goldsmiths, painters, and experts in various fields like medicine, law, and literature. It retains its artisanal spirit, making it a captivating destination in Valnerina. Enclosed by ancient walls, Norcia offers stunning landscapes within the unspoiled nature of the National Park of Mount Sibillini.

On October 30, 2016, a devastating earthquake struck Norcia. This event, with a magnitude of 6.6, was the most powerful to hit the country in decades. The quake caused significant destruction to Norcia's historical buildings, including the collapse of the 14th-century Basilica of St. Benedict. Fortunately, there were no fatalities reported, largely due to the evacuation of many residents following earlier tremors in August.

Following the devastating earthquake, Norcia embarked on a significant restoration effort, focusing on rebuilding and preserving its rich historical and cultural heritage. Visitors to Norcia today can witness a town rejuvenated, with many of its historical sites carefully restored or in the process of being restored. Despite the damage, the town offers plenty to see and experience, from its picturesque streets and restored buildings to its surrounding natural beauty.

The town is also an epicurean paradise, famous for its cured meats and charcuterie shops known as "norcinerias." You can indulge in high-quality salamis, prosciutto, and other pork delicacies. But Norcia has much more to offer, including tiny lentils, foraged mushrooms, truffles, cheese, farro grain, and chocolate. Don't miss out on the local wine either.

Celebrating the Magic of La Befana 🌟🧹

In the heart of Italian folklore lies a charming tale of La Befana, the kind-hearted witch who brings joy to children every Epiphany Eve. Just like Santa Claus and the Three Magi Kings, she travels across Italy on the night of January 5th, rewarding good children with candies and gifts, and the not-so-good ones with coal or dark candies. 🍬🎁🪵

Her name is believed to be derived from the Feast of Epiphany (Festa dell'Epifania) in Italian culture. In rural Sicily, instead of coal, a symbolic stick is placed in stockings to remind children to be good.

As a diligent housekeeper, La Befana is said to sweep the floor before departing, symbolically sweeping away the problems of the year. 🧹✨ Families show their gratitude by leaving a glass of wine and some regional delicacies for her. 🍷🍪

La Befana is traditionally depicted as a friendly hag, soaring through the air on her broomstick, wearing a black shawl and covered in soot from her chimney travels. Always with a smile, she carries a bag full of sweets and surprises. 🌌

In 1974, Frank Vecchione, father of Jessica, the owner and operator of Casa Della Zia, embarked on a photographic journey to Vallo di Nera, a hidden gem in Italy's Sibylline Mountains. His captivating photo essay beautifully captures the daily life and spirit of this then secluded village.

Through Frank's lens, the essence of Vallo di Nera comes alive. His photographs highlight the local farmers, an umbrella repairman, a blacksmith, and women baking bread in outdoor ovens - scenes that showcase the rich traditions and simple beauty of this community Accompanying Frank on this journey were his wife Raissa's sister, Luigina - Jessica’s Zia who inspired the name and spirit of Casa della Zia, and Luigina's husband Mario, whose deep family roots stretch back centuries in Vallo.

Casa Della Zia is excited to share these timeless images with you.
