Educational Programs Available on Marco Island How to tell the difference between a dead and alive Sea Biscuit / Sand Dollar. It's fun to see a live Sand Dollar at low tide half buried in the sand and water. It's even more exciting to see a dead Sand Dollar washed up on the beach .If you see a Sand Dollar that's dark in color and half buried in the sand / water it's most likely still alive and we should leave it alone ..let it stay in its place in the water .Sometimes we find the Sand Dollars grey in color. This has been a concern to many of our guest who are worried about us collecting live Sand Dollars. We only collect empty/ unoccupied shells. We do appreciate the concerns from our viewers / anyone who wants to make sure that nobody takes a living creature out of its habitat especially to just take home for a souvenir. Always look for the Cilia and velvety skin as shown in this video. The velvet /skin, Cilia is what keeps the animal alive...if these things are missing then it's not alive anymore they are dead .When they are dead all that's left is the Tests of the animal just like a shell but the Sand Dollar is not a shell. As in this video you can see they have short spins / tiny hairs so they can move along the ocean floor /in seagrass looking stuff... the spines is how the Sand Dollar breathes. When walking the beach abs you see a Sand Dollar / Sea Biscuit check it out closely before assuming it’s dead . The Cloudy periwinkles are shaped like mangrove periwinkles but have a D -shape aperture and a rust color interior. The light outer color contrasts with a patterned spire. These guys live just above the tide on stumps and rocks near the wave splash . We find / see them daily on the mangrove stumps . Educational Programs Available on Marco Island It’s been a starfish kind of morning. Starfish or Sea Stars are spiny-skinned creatures that belong to a group of animals called echinoderms. They are related to sea urchins, sea cucumbers, sea stars & brittle stars. Most starfish have five or more arms, called rays which are joined to a central body. The mouth is on the underside. Starfish pour acid from their stomach onto their food. The acid dissolves the food so the starfish can digest it. The whelks are beautiful shells ranging from a cream to a gray with showing the different shade colors of brown on the younger shells with lighting-bolt, axil streaks .They have a dozen or more petite knobs on their body whorl, which spirals to their left. Their left handed aperture separates them from most other marine snails .The whelks live in sandy shallows and produces egg masses containing dozens of discs attached by a common string that kind of looks like a snake thats coiled up when found on the beach .The egg discs are strung together by lighting whelks with edge projections. The Sea hares are hermaphrodites both male & female so when mating they often create long chains like a train with each sea hare releasing sperm to the animal ahead of it while receiving sperm from the sea hare behind it. Sea hares are a soft bodied mollusk sometimes call a sea slug they have a small shell inside their body that can reach 8-10 inches. We don't see these guys everyday actually it's a rare sighting to see them at all . We find the tests (the hard inside skeletons ) on the beach, or at least pieces of them mixed in with the wrack. The tiny five holes in the middle of the test are intake valves used to draw in water which operate their tube feet by hydraulic pressure .All of us love the Sand dollars especially the kiddos ..if you're looking for sand dollars to add to your collection we know where to find them . Educational Programs on Marco Island Crown conch seashells can sometimes be called a Kings Crown. The Crown conch is just one of shells that we do often see while out on the islands beach combing . It's very rare though to find one this size thats intact .The Crown conch is a beautiful shell with horizontal brownish gray and off-white stripes. The juveniles can be other colors like a purple blue or a dark brown tan color. When we find them, the colors are partially obscured by algae and calcium buildup .The part of the shell that has been dragging along the sand is most colorful. The Kings Crown walk on the mudflats so at low tide you can see them when partially buried. The crown is one of the sought after shells on the islands as you can see why . Cute little Stone crab acting shy .Stone crabs are stout bodied crabs with claws seemingly enhanced by steroids .😂The juveniles are deep purple and the adults become olive with black spots. Stone crabs have black claw tips .These crabs live around rubble and frequent nearshore reefs and jetties .These guys like to crush and eat barnacles and clams for lunch and dinner . They are thick-shelled with blunt knobbed whorls .Colors vary from pale yellow to chestnut brown with occasional light spots and zigzags. The body whorl has fine spiral cords. They live in sandy shallows, including the swash zone of low -energy beaches .They can quickly flip themselves and walk using their pointed operculum. These cuties feed on algae and detritus.
