GET READY.....another arctic blast is heading our way. Please, ensure that you are following the advice below to prevent damage to our lines and yours. Repairs can be extremely costly to you.
.) Check and re-check your heat tape to ensure that it is plugged in and working. The heat tape generally has an orange light indicating it is working, but should also be warm to the touch. The heat tape will feed out of your water vault and wrap around your incoming water line. Every single resident needs to check their heat tape.
.) We recommend keeping your cabinets open to allow warm air to circulate around your supply lines. This will help to prevent warm / cold lines from freezing inside the home.
.) If your furnace is not working, get it fixed. If you owe a gas bill, call Vectren and see if they will work with you. Space heaters are dangerous and do not uniformly heat the whole house.
.) Make sure your skirting is in place to prevent drafts under your home.
.) Insulate around your pipes and ensure the under belly is secure will help keep cold air from reaching your water supply lines.
.) Remove outside hoses from the outside connections.
.) You shouldn't freeze if you follow all the above advice, but the Red Cross does recommend allowing a steady trickle of water to flow from the faucet furthest from your water heater. This does not require you to run your water at full blast nor do you need to run water from every faucet. The tiniest amount of moving water should help to prevent freezing.
